The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was born in Kano city on July 25, 1930.
Bayero was Nigeria's Ambassador to Senegal at the time he was called home Emir to succeed his father in 1963, after the latter's death.
He ascended the throne just three years after Nigeria gained political Independence from Britain.
The late Bayero, who was respected for his meekness by his subjects, was also commended for his contributions towards the development of commerce in Kano.
His reign was not without its challenges. The late emir and his bosom friend, the Oni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade II, had their passports seized by the Buhari/ Idiagbon military regime for travelling outside the country without seeking permission from the government.
The late emir suffered threats of physical harm as he survived two attacks.
In the first attack, a man who, was later said to have mental health challenges, attacked him in a mosque beside his palace.
The second attack occurred in January 2013 years ago when some suspected Boko Haram insurgents fired bullets at his convoy, killing some of his guards and injured one of his sons along the Zoo Road in Kano.
He also had brushes with some former Kano State governors.
One of such times was during the tenure of the late flamboyant governor, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi.
A threat by the then governor to depose the emir and carry out radical reforms led to a riot which took the life of Rimi's political adviser, Dr. Bala Mohammed.
Bayero, 83, died on Friday and his body was buried according to Islamic rites in his ancestral home, Nassarawa, Kano. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
