Lagos motorists, commuters lament traffic gridlock

Motorists plying various roads in Lagos endured another day of “unforgettable nightmare” because of traffic log-jams on the roads, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The gridlock on the roads was apparently caused by bad spots on the roads and compounded by an overnight rainfall.

The development forced many commuters to resort to trekking in a bid to get to their destinations, while hundreds of workers got to their offices in the afternoon.

A civil servant, Mr Ken Ogaziechi, who was held on a spot on the Apapa-Ijora road, lamented the untold hardship he went through in his bid to get to work.

“This should not happen. Even in a poor country citizens should not suffer this way for something that does not cost their leaders anything to correct.

“It is quite unfortunate that we spend between three and four hours because a small section of the road is bad, something urgently should be done by FERMA,” Ogaziechi said.

A clearing agent, Mr Aloysius Iwuchukwu, said the gridlock had made him to lose hundreds of thousands of naira in the past two weeks.

“Time is money; yesterday I could not get to Apapa to keep an 8 a.m. appointment because of bad traffic. It is the same story again today.

Iwuchukwu appealed to the Lagos State Government and other relevant agencies in the state to find a lasting solution to the problem on the roads to reduce the suffering of residents.

  1. Honestly, the traffic was terrible. I could not get to Apapa too. I left home since 11:33am to meet up with an appointment by 2:30PM but could not made it. I felt really bad. But thank God, the appointment was finally rescheduled.
