JTF arrests suspects, destroys illegal refineries



The Joint Military Task Force in the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, says it has recovered a stolen barge, arrested 11 suspects and scuttled some illegal refineries during its operations in Bayelsa, Delta and Edo states.



The Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, Lt. Col. Mustapha Anka, said this in a statement on Sunday.

Anka said the operatives of the Sector 1 anti-illegal oil bunkering team oF the JTF intercepted and arrested an illegal oil bunkering tugboat, christened ‘MV Daisy’, loaded with suspected illegal refined Automated Gas Oil along the inland waterways of Uvwie Local Government Area of Edo.

He said the captain of the boat, Mr. Samuel Bisha, and three other crew members arrested on board during investigation revealed that the product was transloaded from a faulty tugboat ‘MV Ateri’ into the arrested boat at Benerth Island.

He said the suspects and the tugboat, together with the product, were in custody of Sector 1 for preliminary investigation before handing them over to prosecuting agency.

In Bayelsa, Anka said troops of JTF 343 deployed in Akassa rivers arrested two suspects for illegal oil bunkering in Akassa community of the state.
He said the suspects were arrested in a speed boat with eight drums of stolen AGO.

He said the arrest led the troops to a location inside the creek where AGO was stored in a Cotonou boat.
He said the speedboat along with its contents were destroyed while the suspects had been kept in custody for further interrogation.

The media coordinator also said the troops of the outfit operating along Tobijoh community and Tibo creek in Warri South LGA of Delta State also discovered and scuttled an illegal bunkering sites where oil thieves operated with Cotonou boats.

He said during the raid, 90 LP engines, 20 pumping machines, hoses and 27 plastic tanks filled with stolen AGO were recovered.

Other items discovered at the site, according to him, were 21 surface tanks, six drums and a 40 HP boat engine.
He said the illegal refineries and the items discovered were destroyed immediately.
