Jonathan yet to congratulate the new Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi

Twenty-four hours after the emergence of a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano, President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to congratulate him on his appointment.

Sanusi was on Sunday named the new emir by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State to succeed the late Alhaji Ado Bayero, who died on Friday.

There has been no love lost between Jonathan and the new emir since the President suspended him from office as the CBN governor on February 20.

In suspending Sanusi, Jonathan had said in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, that he found out that Sanusi’s tenure as the CBN governor had been characterised by acts of financial recklessness and misconduct, which the Presidency said was inconsistent with the administration’s vision.

The President named a Deputy Governor of the CBN, Dr. Sarah Alade, as the acting governor and ordered the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria to conduct further investigations into what he called breaches of enabling laws, due process and mandate of the CBN under Sanusi.

Sanusi is still contesting his suspension and his probe in court as of the time he emerged as the new emir.

A source told our correspondent that Jonathan’s plan to travel to Kano to pay condolence to the family of the late emir and the members of the emirate on Monday was put off abruptly.

The source said the trip could have been aborted because of Sanusi’s emergence.

The development, the source added, was seen in the Presidency as a big blow to Jonathan’s fortune in the event that he decided to contest the 2015 presidential election.

He said the combination of the emir and Kwankwaso, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress would spell Jonathan’s electoral misfortune in Kano.

It was not clear at press time if the President would be ready to go and pay homage to the new emir in Kano as is often the practice.

    1. I totally agree with you. The reasons for Sanusis suspension was rather his exposing massive fraud in the oil sector to the tune of billions of dollars. Jonathan and his cohorts in the NNPC collectively embezzled that money and they are trying to divert our attention to unfounded allegation against the San Kano.

Khalid for the first time I agree with you, it really does not matter weather the president congratulates him or not, this kano emair thing only matters to kano peole and muslims, what concerns me with emirs and their likes? absolutely NOTHING. and am damn sure it shouldn't concern the president as well!

  7. Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi....a Yoruba proverb says "agba tio binu lomo e po" dont worry,he(Jonathan) is just pretending,he will come bow for you....if he (Jonathan) likes he can spend 50 hours(and not 24hours) preparing,he must come, just wait patiently for him

    1. What makes you think so? Jona does not owe any dawn emir homage if he decides not to do so. Nonsense! Infact he cannot pay homage to a criminal who is still standing trial in court. Wait and see your new. emir head to jail, since people don't see honour in clearing their names before assending to high offices.

  8. Jonathan is a coward. Jonathan is coming to bow for Sanusi Lamido Sanusi there is no doubt about this unless he does not go to Kano State.

  9. That's a fact. Emirs throne is thousand times higher than presidency. Presidency position is temporal while Emir's is until death.SLS,May the King live long

  10. Why does all these northerners feel that everything is special about them and they must be celebrated and show power. Nigeria don't give recognition to the Igwes or Obis in the east or all the kings in the south or maybe just Benin. So what is all this noise about the president paying homage to a king like anyother king or congratulating him. Politicians in the north like trouble o and when they see the trouble, I hope they can stand it. They should not think that they can humiliate Jonathan. They are not just fighting Jonathan but the whole s-south. They should just do their business and leave Nigeria out of it. It is not compulsory for Jona to congratulate him or go there.

    1. Exactly my point, the emir is king to kano people and what's my bloody business with that and what's the president's business with that. Paying homage should be a matter of choice and not by force.

  11. THE CLAIMS SURROUNDING SANUSI AS EMIR: IGNORANCE UNLIMITED

I have been wondering: what's all the fuss about the ex-governor of the CBN, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (SLS), becoming an Emir of Kano? In fact, ignorant APC chieftains and members have been gloating over Sanusi's ascendancy to the Emirship throne of his grandfather. Someone even said that it's like scoring a penalty kick against the sitting President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I'm taken aback; I do not understand. A goal? How? I cannot know. How is the president disadvantaged by Sanusi's ascendancy as a mere Emir, an Emir without immunity, without constitutionally defined powers, an Emir who has no power over me if I find myself in Kano any day. What power has Emir Sanusi got to square up or be compared with the president of Nigeria?

To think that Emir SLS is capable of making the president to lose his sleep is the height of ignorance. The Bible must have been referring to people who weirdly think this way when it said that "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6 KJV). It takes the most ignorant, ignoble and dumbest man on earth to think that way.

What are the powers of Emir Sanusi? During and after the colonial period, the emirate powers were steadily reduced. The constitutional powers of the emir were further whittled down by the military regimes. The Native Authority Police and Prisons Department under them was abolished; the emir's judicial council was supplanted by another body, and successive local government reforms (in 1968, 1972, and 1976) reduced the powers of the emir, making him legally inferior to the council chairman. Under the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, an Emir has no recognized powers.

In a way, Emir SLS, who functions at the pleasure of his governor, is constitutionally and legally under his council chairman, who is the chief security officer in the Local Government Area. Emir Sanusi, like other northern Nigeria emirs, has no control over mechanisms of the state such as the police, taxation or criminal justice.

Emir Sanusi only wields considerable power as the top Islamic figure in Kano, which power enables him to choose the imams of the main mosques in Kano. As Emir, he is expected to step in at moments of crisis to mediate inter-religious violence or land disputes before they spiral out of control. He is also expected to play an important role in warding off religious fundamentalism, a role we all know that the Sudan-trained and radicalized Sanusi is most unlikely to play.

On the whole and in summary, Emir Sanusi's exercise of power or authority is strictly a function of how much the people choose to respect him; it's non-statutory. And as an Emir, he poses no threat to the president or to his party.

  12. Weldone for posting hocus-pocus without any concentrative, all thy grammars are bullshit, calling someone an illiterate doesn't means that you're not illiterate too. Check thy all write-ups and judge thyself whether you're an educated person or you're just a •dunny's fly• if sunusi lamido sunusi has became an emir of kano state isn't your conception then why did you posts some meaningless lines about him, i knew you love •Good-lizard• ebele jonathan the president of domestic animals excluding me• that's the reason why you are just barking like a dog for defending a person that's nothing but a zero (0) behind a decimal point who called jonathan, for the suspect of former •CBN• governor S.L.S which's an acceptable reason for thee! Please don't insult a person even for 1 minute if the person didn't tag your appellation and post a comment on thou. TAKE NOTE dude!! =))
