Fresh Boko Haram attack in Borno, 45 dead

Over 45 persons have been reportedly killed while several others sustained gunshot injuries when members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect attacked Bargari village in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday night.

Bargari is on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the state capital and about 30 kilometres south-east of Giwa Barracks which was attacked on March 14.
The attack, it was gathered, left many people displaced as the insurgents were said to have set many houses ablaze. Shops, vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles were also set on fire by the insurgents.
The insurgents were also alleged to have carted away food items and livestock.
The sound of the attack, which reverberated through some parts of Maiduguri, sent fears into many residents who thought the insurgents had entered the seemingly fortified state capital.
A resident of the village who was lucky to escape the attack after he ran into the bush, Mallam Abubakar Maikudi, said when he sneaked into the community after the insurgents had left to pick up some toiletries, "I counted 45 dead bodies including one of my neighbours."
Maikudi added, "The gunmen, who came into the village at about 9pm on Wednesday, gathered residents in one place after convincing them that they came into Bargari to propagate the teaching of Islam, and when almost all residents had gathered, another large number of terrorists came from nowhere and opened fire on the congregation. We started running for our dear lives, I was able to escape but the gunmen were able to kill over 40, injured many before they started looting properties and set buildings ablaze. They razed the whole village completely."
Another resident, who was also lucky to escape, but pleaded not to be named said, "The gunmen numbering about 20 laid an ambush for the villagers, after entering the village in four Toyota Hilux vehicles. They were armed with AK47 rifles, Improvised Explosive Devices and petrol bombs. They fled towards the Sambisa Forest after they destroyed the village."
The incident was also captured on BBC Hausa Service monitored in Maiduguri, which claimed that about 45 persons were killed by the Boko Haram sect in Bargari village on Wednesday.
All attempts to get official confirmation was unsuccessful as the mobile line of the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jubrin, gave an engaged tone when he was called for comment as of the time of filing the report.
A top police officer, who was not authorised to speak on the issue, however, confirmed the attack to journalists, saying that, "45 people were killed when suspected terrorists invaded Bargari village near Maiduguri, leaving several others seriously injured."
