Edo State House of Assembly has suspended the Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea, and three other members of the House on the ground of misconduct.
Addressing newsmen at the Anthony Enahoro Assembly Complex in Benin, on Friday, the Chairman, Youths, Sports and Information of the House, Adjoto Kabiru, disclosed that the suspension of the Deputy Speaker became inevitable owing to his arrogance, dictatorship and disrespect for the office of the Speaker of the House, Uyi Igbe.
“The Deputy Speaker, Honourable Festus Ebea, has become so arrogant and dictatorial that he no longer sees the office of Mr. Speaker as one.
“He has created parallel leadership that is aimed at destabilizing Edo State House of Assembly; impeaching Mr. Speaker and the Comrade Governor. That, to a large extent, amounts to a misconduct,” he said.
On the suspension of the three other members of the House: Patrick Osayimwen, Oredo East; Friday Ogieriakhi, Orhionmwon South and Jude Idehen, Ikpoba-okha, Kabiru alleged that the law makers, who had on May 19 decamped from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had been involved in financial racketeering with a view to persuade other members of the House to follow suit.
“These suspended honourable members have virtually constituted themselves into what I will call bankers and markets that have been given targets to meet.
“They have virtually approached all members standing here to sell our mandates to the Peoples Democratic Party.
“They have mentioned heavy amounts, from N50 million to N70 million. They have approached me that if I am willing to sell my mandate to the People Democratic Party, I would be offered N70 million.
The law maker explained that the suspended members had approached key members of the House on a daily basis to sell their mandate.
“What they do now is to start approaching members, dangling evil and poisonous carrot.
“To a very large extent, that is not what we are elected to come and do here.
He also noted that the suspended law makers had taken the entire House to court for reasons the House was yet to establish.
“Their activities constitute a misconduct that is why we have considered it, as a responsible Assembly, until they deem it fit to do what is right.
“It is the tradition of the Edo State House of Assembly and it is in our rule that if any member takes the House to court, that member stands suspended until the matter is decided,” Kabiru said.
Earlier, a large number of youths from the respective constituencies of the suspended legislators had stormed the state assembly, calling for the resignation of the defected legislators. The youths urged the House to declare the status of the defected lawmakers within 7 days. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
