UN Security Council votes on B’Haram status

The United Nations Security Council al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee will on Thursday (today) vote on the status of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre and Director, National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri, disclosed this on Wednesday at a press briefing on the ongoing war against terrorism in the country.

Nigeria had on Tuesday formally asked the United Nations Security Council al Qaeda Sanctions Committee to blacklist Boko Haram for the kidnapping of over 200 schoolgirls from the Government Secondary Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.

If there is no objection by the 15-member council committee, which operates by consensus, Boko Haram will be sanctioned.

Omeri, who expressed optimism that the council would cast a positive vote on the request also put the official casualty figure of the twin bomb blast in Jos on Tuesday at 75.

He said, “The UN Security Council is set to vote on the status of Boko Haram. The Federal Government has formally asked the council mounting sanctions against al-Qaeda to include Boko Haram on the list of organisations that should be subjected to arms embargo.

“Voting on this issue is slated for Thursday, May 22, 2014.

“We can assure you that the 15-member council which Nigeria recently chaired will definitely vote in the affirmative as they all condemn the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria and the sub-region.”

Omeri also said that the Federal Government had contributed a battalion of troops to the force being put together by some countries within the African region to control the menace of Boko Haram.

He said, “Following the decision taken at the recent Paris summit attended by a number of African leaders, Nigeria has commenced the implementation of the agreement reached by contributing a battalion of troops to the regional force being put together to check terrorism and strengthen cooperation in the sub-region while France, United States and United Kingdom will extend technical assistance to achieve the objectives.”

On the blasts in Jos, Omeri said the dead victims were made up of 73 adults and two children. He said that the Federal Government had ordered the supply of relief materials to survivors and families of the victims.

The NOA boss said, “We wish to reiterate government’s condolence as expressed by President Goodluck Jonathan to the families of the victims of this heinous and gruesome act which is despicable in all descriptions.

“Indeed, it is a horrifying crime which must be deplored by all Nigerians and people of good conscience. The official casualty figures as of this afternoon (Wednesday) are as follows.

“There are 44 demise souls at the Jos University Teaching Hospital; Plateau State Specialist Hospital, 25; and Jan Kwano Specialist Hospital, six; bringing the total number of those that have died to 75. There are 73 adults and two children. The total number of those injured is 70.

“The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, while assuring the public that his government remains committed in this campaign has ordered the immediate supply of relief materials to the families of the victims and other survivors of the incident.”
