Terrorism: produce cctv images; experts challenge FCT Minister

Contrary to claims by the Minister of Federal capital Territory, Sen. Balla Mohammed that the Close Circuit Television cameras, CCTV installed across the Federal capital Territory were active and functional, security experts have dismissed the claim and challenged him to produce the images of the cameras as prove of his claim.

The experts threw the challenge at a two‑day School Security Conference organised by an Abuja Security outfit, Spytech Security & Guards, with the team : School Security in Insecure Times: A concern for Parents, Teachers and the Community.

They wondered how the security cameras could be working without the security agents neither capturing nor monitoring the movements of the insurgents terrorising the Capital city.

One of the facilitators at the conference, Kabir Adamu, said the claim by the Minister, amidst the recent bomb blast in Nyanya, was a mere claim by the Minister.

While challenging the Minister to produce the images of the cameras at the scene of the bomb blast incident in Nyanya, Adamu regretted that the country had been brought to its knee because the citizens had refused to ask questions about the images of the cameras.

"How will the common man know that the CCTVs are working? We can only know if 'he shows us clips of what was recorded in Nyanya the days it was bombed. You and I do not know where the command and control is, but I belief they are working, we should demand for their clips and the Minister should be bold to show the clips."

Nigerians are not demanding. If they demand for the clips, they will bring it out for us,== Adamu said.

With the present security situation in the country, Adamu added what the country needed is to adopt modern technology, saying that the idea of stop and search by security men was no longer relevant.

We really need to go into technology because with what we are seeing presently, the mere eye cannot win it. Even though, we still face power challenge, some of these technology gargets come with their backup power; after all we have solar energy. I don=t know why we are not tapping into it.

We have gone past the case of opening boots and opening bags or trunks. By now we should be using technology to search those things because the normal average man on duty can only give you four hour attention and the remaining hours, he is carried away.

But with technology, it is difficult for anyone to bridge it. That is what Nigeria is not getting right, hence the Gordon Brown $10 million donation for schools in Borno to be safe‑guided with technology gargets, he pointed out.
In addition to technology, the expert called for increased awareness among the people wondering what the National Orientation Agency, NOA had been doing in enlightening the Nigerian public on the need to be security alert.

According to him, the agency needed to step up a robust awareness on security, insisting that the security situation in the country will improve if it does so.

  1. It is common thing for our politicians to lie about everything, so we know he is lying. Nothing in Nigeria works, except stealing public funds.
