Governments of states in the southern part of the country are bracing for possible attacks by the Boko Haram sect. There are fears that the sect, which has its base in the North-East, may extend its targets to the South.
The terrorist group had claimed responsibility for several attacks and kidnappings in the northern part of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Abuja, the seat of the Nigerian government, has recorded three major attacks in 2014 alone.
Boko Haram suspects in detention at the headquarters of the Department of State Services attempted a jailbreak on March 30, leading to a shootout. The terrorists have also attacked Nyanya, Abuja twice, killing over 100 and injuring many others.
On Friday, the Kwara State Government, which described the recent Abuja bombings as horrible, inhuman, barbaric unacceptable and lamented that nowhere was safe in the country. It said the entire country was apprehensive over the activities of terrorists.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tunji Moruonfoye, said the government was collaborating with security agencies to prevent any terrorist incursion or attacks.
He, however, expressed fears that the terrorists could still break through the security system.
Moruonfoye said, “Nowhere is safe in Nigeria today. It has nothing to do with Kwara alone. It is all of us. If anybody will be hit, we should be bothered. Our children are being kidnapped and taken away by this sect. It could be anybody’s child. The whole country is apprehensive.
“We are going to be consumed, if we do not do something about it in uniformity.
“We are doing a lot of underground work such as intelligence and investigation. If we see suspicious people, they are interrogated. There are other security measures that I will not make public. We are providing logistic support for the law-enforcement agencies.”
Moruonfoye added that the Kwara State Government was focusing on intelligence gathering.
Also, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command urged residents of the state not to panic over the bombings in Abuja. The Police said it had mapped out strategies to tackle insecurity in the state.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, said the force had bomb disposal units at different motor parks, airports and some other strategic places, with a view to preventing disaster.
He said, “Although this incident has not occurred in the state, we have taken a number of precautions.”
Similarly, the Nigeria Police, Cross River Command, said it was not taking anything for granted.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State, Mr. Hogan Bassey, said the Thursday blast in Abuja was a warning that the insurgency was bound to affect all the states in the country.
He said, “Any part of Nigeria that is touched will affect all the states. We are, however, putting modalities in place to make sure we do not have that kind of experience here.”
In the same vein, the state government, through the State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, said going by the developments in Abuja, it had become necessary to step up intelligence.
The Ondo State Government said it was collaborating with various security agencies in the state and it was fully prepared to protect the lives of Ondo people.
The state Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said on Friday that there was the need for a synergy among all security agencies and governments to curtail the rampaging insurgents.
He said, “We want to assure the people of Ondo State that structures have been put in place to ensure their safety. However, we cannot be talking about the strategies to curtail the terrorists on the pages of newspapers.”
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government on Friday said the security network in the state had not been compromised. It gave residents in the state the assurance that there would be no Boko Haram bombings.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke, said, “We keep improving on the security network so as not to take chances.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, equally said there was no cause for alarm.
“We have mounted heavy security presence in all entry points to the state,” said Amaraizu.
Similarly, the Osun State Government said it had put in place a number of security measures to ensure that such attacks did not occur in the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, told one of our correspondents that security agencies had intensified their patrol of the state.
He said, “The government has purchased over 300 patrol vans for security agencies and they were distributed. This has enhanced the mobility of security agencies in the state because they are now able to patrol the state.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

Puting everything wil nt help, face the problem of poverty first, unemployment rate first, example a graduate who have graduated for about 3 to 4 years without job and see who wil offer him about 500,000 to do some evil thing he or she may accept it because of no job/poverty and the oppurtunity of grabing the money, this is why the rate of unrest is in the increase in the country..if the government tacle that, insecurity wil die naturally bt if them refused,I dnt knw the future of the nation.
ReplyDeleteAmnesty for a terrorist organization that has caused Nigeria and Nigerians more pain and destruction than the civil war is not only insane, its a showcasing of ignorance and a confirmation of my earlier suspecting that this blog NIGERIANEYE if not indirectly linked to boko haram is highly in partnership with the opposition APC whose many influential members are linked to the boko haram,I say this cos many Nigerians know that this website has never been neutral or objective in its news blog,if its not a direct attack on the President commander in chief of the Armed forces,it is on his wife or cabinet. Many people know this but won't bother to say it cos it will be deleted immediately.now back to the issue at hand, amnesty for a bunch of killers who has no other aim but to kill and make Jonathans govt unstable, thank God they can't succeed. 1. The militants in Niger Delta are fightng for a cause, not only the liberation of their land, but to let the world know and see the desecration of their land through oil spillage, what is boko haram fighting for? Islamization of Nigeria? With an equal number of muslims and christians? It will never happen (2) The Niger delta militants never attacked and slaughtered innocent civilians in their sleep, they directed their anger to govt forces and they were brave enuf to stand them in certain cases, they even write letters to the civilians to leave the place before they attack, boko haram does the opposite, they innocent men and women, children and old, pregnant and every kinds of living things (3) some militants in the Niger delta was revealed to have embarked on community projects like building of schools and health centres, thus they won sympathy from the people and even got prayers from their people who see them as liberators, boko haram on the other hand destroys the little the people have and steal from them, and kidnap their children and demand ransom from the poor people (4) the niger delta militants respect and heed their elders call to drop arms and embrace amnesty, they have spokesmen and people who reach out to them, boko haram our cowards who don't want to be known or be spoken to,they kill their elders (6) while boko haram has recruited the help of other int'l evil terrorist organization who has been known not to dialogue but kill and kill until they themselves are killed, the niger delta militants fought for themselves by themselves.(7) while the Niger delta militants sought realistic things to negotiate for, which was why they got it,boko haram is seeking for unrealistic things which they can't and won't get. So when one looks at all this, all the people that has been killed, maimed and rendered refugees in their own country,it is insane for the govt to hand over amnesty to this cowards,it will be a betrayal of the Nigerian people, and that will never happen, what government should do is to continue what it is doing while taking help from people who knows the way to kill this monster. AND LET ME SAY IT CLEAR,IF YTOU DON'T GIVE BOKO HARAM A REASON TO NEGOTIATE,TO COME TO THE TABLE,THEY WILL CONTINUE KILLING AND IF THEY COME TO THE TABLE WITHOUT THAT REASON,THEY WILL MAKE DEMANDS THAT WILL BE TOO BIG FOR ANYONE TO ACCEDE TO,THEY WILL DICTATE TERMS COS THEY HAVE THE UPPER HAND,SO GOVT MUST GIVE THEM the OPTION OF LIFE OR DEATH AND I MEAN CRUEL DEATH.then some or maybe some will see need to negotiate. And am suggesting that as soon as those innocent girls are released save and sound, that sambesi forest should be bombed from air to the last tree.if our environment is clean,we won't have cockroaches hiding in them!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 10:13 you have typed well. Those forests should be set on fire and just like animals are pushed out into the open the memebers should be pushed out. They place should be cleared after it is bombed. Bulldozers should be used to remove every tree stump or bush so that there is no hiding place for even rats. Meanwhile southern governments should get intelligence in all those sl called hausa quarters that are in the south so that they can learn of any impending attacks before it ever surfaces. Those train that are to go from one end of the country to another must be manned like airports are. There sbould be security cameras and metal detectors at the stations. Common Nigeria we can afford high tech security and intelligence in the country.
Deleteterrorist organization that has caused Nigeria and Nigerians more pain and destruction than the civil war,why are they trying to end up the life of good Nigerians,i put a call the President to let Niger delta militants to fight the so call boko haram, they have kill two much,Mr President let Niger delta militants fight boko haram,God bless Nigeria

DeleteWar has no deliberations. These people have declared war on the Nigerian Nation. They are hiding under the umbrella of very religion. I believe the Government knows what to do and they should do it FAST. Its spreading....we shouldn't be watching but acting. Nobody is blaming the Govt.,they have resources they can deplore to curb this evil and quench its fire.
