Two pupils were among those burnt to death along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway in an accident involving two tankers laden with fuel on Friday.
Our correspondent gathered that the accident, which occurred at Asejire, the boundary of Oyo and Osun states, claimed the life of one of the tanker drivers, his assistant and one other person.
Eyewitnesses said that the accident occurred around 7:40am while pupils were on their way to school.
It was gathered that one of the tanker was trying to overtake the other on a sloppy section of the road when it lost control and fell.
One of the victims, a student of a public school in Osun State, was waiting for a bus by the roadside when the tanker fell and spilled its content.
The Premium Motor Spirit, which one of the trucks was converting, spilled and a spark led to an inferno which burnt the victims to death.
The raging fire caught a school bus belonging to a private school and one of the pupils in the vehicle was said to have burnt to death.
The charred body of the student of a public school was seen by the roadside when our correspondent got to the scene.
Apart from five persons who died in the accident, six other persons sustained varied degrees of injuries.
The fire also razed some kiosks, mechanic workshops and other structures by the roadside.
The accident caused a gridlock on the road despite effort by the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police and sympathisers to ease movement. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
