Police stop Chibok girls’ protest in Kogi

Kogi State POlice Command on Wednesday aborted a planned protest by Civil Society Organisations in the state against the abduction and continued non release of over 200 girls of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, abducted by the Boko Haram sect three weeks ago.

Our correspondent gathered that the civil society organisations had perfected plans to embark on the protest in Lokoja on Wednesday but had to stop based on a letter from the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Saudu Madawaki.

According to a copy of the letter, obtained by our correspondent, which was signed on behalf of the CP by Mr.Abdul Mohammed, an assistant commissioner of police, the CP said the planned protested was disallowed because of the prevailing security situation in the country.

The letter read, “Re invitation to a state rally on the current state of violence in Nigeria. Please refers to you letter dated 20 April, 2014 in respect of the above subject matter. I am directed by the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, to draw your attention to the fact that this period is not conducive security wise for such a rally. It is therefore advised that it be put off/postpone till future date.”

But the CSO in statement on Wednesday condemned the police action.

In the statement signed on its behalf by the Project Director, Participation Initiative For Behavioural Change in Development, Mr. Adejoh Victor, the group stated that it was worrisome and unacceptable that more than three weeks after the abduction, the Federal Government and its security agencies have not been able to locate and rescue the innocent abducted girls.
