Memo: I wasn’t grilled by police, says Nyako

The governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, on Wednesday decried what he said were attempts by a faceless group to cause friction between his administration and the police.

Nyako also said news going the rounds that he was grilled by detectives from the police headquarters over the contents of his memo to Northern governors was false.

The governor said this while speaking through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Ahmad Sajoh, via the telephone.

He explained that the report was part of a larger plot to smear his image and also cause disaffection within the state.

Sajoh said, “The news report that police detectives from Force Headquarters grilled Governor Murtala Nyako for four hours at the Government House, Yola on Tuesday the 29th of April, 2014, is not only false but also mischievous.

“This story which obviously did not emanate from the paper’s reporter in Yola is definitely planted by some persons in Abuja with a view to embarrassing the state governor and creating friction between the government of Adamawa State and police authorities.”

Sajoh explained that some “Abuja- based” individuals who were hell bent on stoking the embers of hatred and discord between the governor of Adamawa State and Federal Government agencies for unwholesome motives were behind the report.

According to him, the true position of things was that Governor Nyako as a major stakeholder in the security set-up of the state received a team from Force Headquarters on a fact-finding visit to Adamawa State.

The team, which was accompanied by the state Commissioner of Police Mr. A. J. Abakasanga, had open and frank discussions on all matters related to their visit which had no connection whatsoever with the governor’s memo.

The governor’s spokesman also noted that the same individuals released a fake letter purportedly written by the police commissioner requesting the release of a venue to the PDP for a rally.

He said the CP had since denied writing or issuing any such letter adding that the same group went to town with reports that security around the governor had been reduced. This, he said, was another lie.

The governor, he said, enjoyed a cordial working relationship with security agencies working in the state.

He appealed to those behind the misinformation to stop forthwith in the interest of peace.
