Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is now a huge doubt for the World Cup after it was revealed that he would undergo surgery on a knee injury, Goal reports.
The Liverpool star, who was voted PFA Player of the Year by his peers after scoring 31 goals in the just concluded season, felt some discomfort during a training session with his international team-mates on Tuesday.
Subsequent tests showed a problem in his knee meniscus and the 27-year-old will now go under the knife this week, with La Celeste officials desperately hoping that he will recover in time for this summer’s tournament in Brazil.
Uruguay had been placed in Group D in Brazil, along with England, Italy and Costa Rica and the news will come as a boost to Roy Hodgson’s men, who are scheduled to face Oscar Tabarez’s side on June 14.
However, Tabarez can also call on Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, with the two forwards likely to spearhead the side’s attack if Suarez does indeed miss out. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
