JOS BLASTS: Police lying on casualty figure - Hospitals

A pathologist at the Chemistry Department of Plateau Specialist Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, because he was not authorised to speak, said security agencies are being economical with the truth regarding the casualty figures in the Terminus Market bomb blasts, which occurred on Tuesday in Jos.

He said, “As I am talking to you now, more than 100 corpses are in the hospital and I am sure that there are more in Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Our Lady of Apostles Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital. Some of the bodies have also been identified and released to their families for burial.”

A staff member of the National Emergency Management Agency, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that some of those injured and hospitalised following the blasts, died late on Tuesday and early the hours of Wednesday.

He said those killed from the Jos explosions had increased to over 200, adding that 15 of the injured victims, who were brought to the casualty unit, died just before midnight on Tuesday.

A laboratory manager at the National Blood Transfusion unit of the Plateau Specialist Hospital, who identified himself as Demne, said most of the 15 victims died during treatment due to loss of blood.

He said although there were a few donors, who volunteered to donate blood, the hospital needed a lot more to treat the victims.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), we had persons who came and donated blood freely to the National Blood Transfusion Centre. We are calling for more donors,” he said.

It can be recalled that the Plateau Police Commissioner Chris Olakpe said there were “46 dead, 45 injured”, a figure believed to be a gross under estimation of the casualties.
