Jonathan leads a corrupt government - New York Times

The United States- based New York Times has said that President Goodluck Jonathan is leading a corrupt government.

It added that the government had little credibility.

The newspaper, in its editorial published on its website on May 6, condemned Jonathan’s “inept and slow” attitude towards locating and rescuing the schoolgirls abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.

It also condemned the reaction of the President’s wife, Patience, to the incident, describing it as “stunningly callous.”

It expressed worry that it took the Jonathan administration more than two weeks after the kidnappings, to call a meeting of government officials to discuss the incident.

The editorial stated, “Mr. Jonathan, who leads a corrupt government that has little credibility, initially played down the group’s threat and claimed security forces were in control.

“It wasn’t until Sunday, more than two weeks after the kidnappings, that he called a meeting of government officials, including the leader of the girls’ school, to discuss the incident.

“There is no doubt the intelligence and investigation help President Obama offered on Monday is needed.”

The violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had claimed responsibility for the kidnappings with its leader, Abubakar Shekau, saying in a video clip released on Monday that “I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah.”

The newspaper said the President’s inept and slow approach to the incident was shocking.

The editorial read in part, “Three weeks after their horrifying abduction in Nigeria, 276 of the more than 300 girls who were taken from a school by armed militants are still missing, possibly sold into slavery or married off.

“Nigerian security forces apparently do not know where the girls are and the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has been shockingly slow and inept at addressing this monstrous crime.”

On the reaction of Patience to the incident hurling abuses at demonstrators who were demanding government’s action to rescue the girls, the newspaper said, “The reaction of Mr. Jonathan’s wife, Patience, was stunningly callous; according to state news media, she told one of the protest leaders, ‘You are playing games. Don’t use schoolchildren and women for demonstrations again’.”

It pointed out that the 6,000 troops deployed in Abuja for the World Economic Forum on Africa, could only keep delegates safe “but Nigeria’s deeply troubled government cannot protect its people, attract investment and lead the country to its full potential if it cannot contain a virulent insurgency.”

  2. If we Nigerian are afraid to say the truth, then American will refuse to play down the truth. Imagine a fat after the abduction, the corrupt president embacking on a political visit to kano state to welcome decampee to PDP while those young girls were no where to be found. Not to talk of the enormous amount of money that is projected for security without any result.

    2. Open your eyes to happenings around you, all these nonsense you wrote will not make Nigeria unite. there's an ongoing war to kill all Christians and you are here asking n writing these meaningless things. Nigeria should split and that's our only solution to staying alive for now. this forced marriage called Nigeria is a wicked act by colonial masters and we should be looking for ways to break off and stay alive. only living people can use roads and electricity. Nigeria should break along religious lines, along regions or even states, I careless. I just want to live very far from this killers called Islamic people! #LetNigeriaSpilt#

  8. One 'good' that is coming out of all this is something similar to James Ibori's case, who was cleared by a Nigerian court of corruption but found guilty of the same charges by a British court.

For all the Jonathan cheerleading crowd, what would they now say in his defence since this indictment is coming from a respected, non-Nigerian newspaper?

  9. The late Azazi told us that PDP was behind boko haram, and I believe him. he lost his life shortly after that. Corruption, oil theft, boko haram and PDP have many things in common. Until we rise up against them, this nation will not know peace.

  11. I said it! GEJ is a corrupt useless leader(pardon) but some pple on this platform thinks otherwise, we've never had it worst like this in Nigeria! Fine, he might not be the sole cause of everything but under his regime and watch Nigerians experienced the worst regime so far. He incapable of been a leader!! Check out

    * no corrupt individual jailed in 6yrs of his reign as president even corrupt elements that are his enemies could not be prosecuted and jailed , are we all saints in Nigeria?

*He is too slow in coming out with solutions to problem facing the Nation.

*He can't rule or control his family especially the wife. A man that cannot rule his home is not fit to rule a Nation. His wife has brought him more shame compared to any of the past rulers.

*He pardoned Alams and awarded Abacha a medal of honour. What does that tell us?I'm sure if Ibori was here he will get his own too.

    * He is a coward!

*Does not think before he talks, imagine he said BH are in his government! How can a sitting President say this on a national TV? Then if they are in the government fish them out!

    * His body language supports corruption, remember the Governor Forum election, Oduagate, Allison Maduake issues,20 billion missing etc.

My fellow country men haba!! We need a change! We need to find another capable leader either in PDP or APC (cz that's wt we have for now) but definitely not GEJ.

Now pple far away can observe what some of us fail to observe! To the critics and GEJ supporters don't haul insult at me just direct the insults to the Americans or the New York times .

    3. How did you expect not to be insulted mark, ignorance is what destroys Nigerians, although all you have said is true people would insult you still cause according to them, he his christian or from their region, as such he must have thier best interest at heart. This shouldn't stop you though who knows they might just be one person out there who might be inspired from the truth. We Nigerians actually deserve our government, we are corrupt, highly ignorant, base our opinions on intangible things like tribe etc. Religion and the idea off God will save us has crippled our imagination totally, leaving us as a matter of fact highly knowledgeable, as such I doubt if anything would change, with such people even after writing the truth would still evoke a response of ignorance
