The step might have been taken following last week's alert from the US Embassy that the insurgents had planned to attack some public institutions and hotels. The airline said the alert became necessary as some of the travelling public may miss their flights because of the new security details at the airports, advising them to set out early for their flights to avoid loss of travel time.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had on May 1, 2014, commenced new security measures at all international airports in the country. Since the new measures, access and movements to such airports have been restricted to only those who have business transactions to conduct there. Hangers-on and unwarranted visitors are no longer tolerated within the vicinity of the airports. It is observed that security at the airports is now manned by the stern-looking camouflage military personnel assisted by the Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), including State Security Service (SSS) officials, who stand in strategic locations to observe movements of persons and luggage in and out of the arrival and departure terminals.
An online statement by the spokesman of the airline, Mr. Ola adebanji ,stated that the Federal Government has put extra security measures in place at all airports, which he noted could cause traffic snare on airport roads leading to unforeseen delays or missed flights for travellers. Adebanji added that the new security measures being implemented by government has led to visible presence of more security personnel across the nation's airports. The statement further stated that "Passengers are also advised to familiarise themselves with check-in procedures at the airport. Arik Air check-in counters open two hours before departure for domestic flights, three hours for Regional and four hours for International flights. " All passengers must have completed check-in for their flights prior to checkin closure which is 30 minutes (for Domestic Flights), 45 minutes (Regional Flights) and 90 minutes (for International Flights) before the scheduled departure time," he added.
