Tears marked the celebration of ‘Children’s Day’ in Enugu State on Tuesday as schoolchildren wept over the plight of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram sect in Chibok, Borno State.
The children, including primary school pupils and secondary school students, turned the Okpara Square, venue of a parade organised to mark the celebration, into a prayer ground.
Pointing their hands towards an imaginary direction of Sambisa Forest, where Boko Haram is believed to be holding the schoolgirls, they prayed for their safety and speedy release.
Some of the children carried placards with inscriptions that denounced the abduction of the Chibok girls while also calling for their immediate release.
The placards also demanded an end to what they described as the “harassment of schoolchildren and their teachers in the northern part of the country.”
Led in the prayers by the state Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Rev. Godwin Madu, and the state Secretary of Christian Association Nigeria, Rev. Emeka Ejim, the children noted that there was no cause for celebrations as long as their mates were still in captivity.
They also urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to ensure the quick release of the schoolgirls.
Amid tears, Miss Precious Ede, who prayed on behalf of the children, said, “We did not come here to celebrate, rather we came here to express our anguish at the continued plight of our mates in the hands of the Boko Haram people.
“We came to seek God’s intervention so that they can be freed because just like us, they committed no crime by going to school.
“We are confident that God will answer us because even as we are praying, we know that His angels are already at work in Sambisa Forest or wherever our mates are being held.”
The parade took place after the prayers, following which the state Governor, Sullivan Chime, denounced the abduction of the schoolgirls and other activities of the Boko Haram sect. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
