THERE was a mild drama in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday as angry youths and elders chased the Council Chairman, Mr. Austin Ahiamadu, away from the council secretariat in Omoku.
The youths had been at loggerheads with the council chairman over the alleged dissolution of Omoku Youth Association and the Community Development Committee in the area put in place by the traditional ruler of the area, Eze Chukwuemela Nnan Obi II.
Ahiamadu, who was on his way to the council secretariat, oblivious of the presence of protesting youths and elders outside the council secretariat’s gate, was chased away by the crowd.
The council chairman had to hurriedly retreat to avoid being lynched by the angry crowd, who chanted war songs while blocking the entrance to the secretariat.
Describing the dissolution of the CDC as an insult to the monarch, hundreds of Omoku elders and youths barricaded the entrance to the secretariat, threatening more demonstrations should the council chairman refuse to apologise to their monarch.
Chairman of Omoku CDC, Mr. Azubuike Toby, explained that apart from insulting the royalfather, Ahiamadu had desecrated the custom of the land by dissolving the CDC put in place by the monarch.
Toby, who spoke with newsmen during the protest, pointed out that Ahiamadu erred by banning Omoku Youth Association and Omoku Community Development Committee without the knowledge of the traditional ruler.
He said, “We will not allow the chairman to return to the council unless he apologise to the Obi, OYA and OCDC. This protest will continue until he (Ahiamadu) is loyal to the Obi (traditional ruler).
“You can see the entrance to the secretariat is already blocked and nothing is happening here today. That is how it is going to be. The banning of the CDC and youth organisation is an orchestrated design to deny Omoku community a voice on issues affecting the youths and the community development.”
But the council chairman maintained that he did not insult the Obi (traditional ruler), adding that he has the right to dissolve the youth association and Omoku CDC.
Ahiamadu said, “I cannot insult the Obi; he is my father. The only thing I did is to dissolve the OYA and OCDC and I have the right to do so.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
