President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted the offer made by President Barack Obama to deploy United States troops and equipment in Nigeria to assist in locating the schoolgirls abducted from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Abati said the offer of assistance was conveyed to Jonathan by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, in a telephone conversation he initiated on behalf of Obama.
He said shortly after the telephone conversation, the President also met with security chiefs in continuation of efforts aimed at rescuing the schoolgirls.
Abati said the President approved some of the recommendations made during the meeting for further actions.
The statement read, “President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday welcomed and accepted a definite offer of help from the United States of America in the ongoing effort to locate and rescue the girls abducted from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok three weeks ago.
“The offer from President Barack Obama which was conveyed to President Jonathan by the United States Secretary of State, Mr. John Kerry in a telephone conversation which began at 15.30 Hours today, includes the deployment of US security personnel and assets to work with their Nigerian counterparts in the search and rescue operation.
“Mr. Kerry assured President Jonathan that the United States is wholly committed to giving Nigeria all required support and assistance to save the abducted girls and bring the reign of terror unleashed on parts of the country by Boko Haram to an end.
“Thanking Mr. Kerry for the call and offer of further assistance, President Jonathan told him that Nigeria’s security agencies who were already working at full capacity to find and rescue the abducted girls would appreciate the deployment of American counter-insurgency know-how and expertise in support of their efforts.
“After speaking with the United States Secretary of State, President Jonathan today met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and heads of national security agencies in continuation of the national efforts to find and rescue the abducted girls.
“The President received updates on the ongoing search and rescue effort, and gave approval for recommended further actions.”
Meanwhile, some elders from the North Eastern part of the country led by a former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, met behind closed doors with the President on Tuesday in continuation of efforts to end insurgency in the region.
Three states of the region: Adamawa, Borno and Yobe are currently under emergency rule which Jonathan declared last year May following escalating violence.
Some Northern elders had kicked against the renewal of the rule at expiration in May.
Those who attended the meeting did not speak with journalists at the end of the parley that lasted about two hours.
Among those who were on the delegation were Prof. Jubril Aminu; Alhaji Shettima Mustapha, Ambassador Babangana Kingibe, Alhaji Ibrahim Bunu, Alhaji Khalifa Yusuf and Alhaji Muhammed Kirfi among others. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

MR PRESIDENT IN AS LONG AS WE NEED AN URGENT PANACEA TO END THIS BH MONSTROUS / EVIL ACT, WE HAVE TO AS NATION BE CAREFUL IN INVITING USA AS THEIR RECORDS IN COMBATING THE ACTIVITIES OF INSURGENTS OVER THE WORLD ARE NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT. BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS LEAVE TEARS AND BLOOD THAN THE WAY THEY MET, LIKE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN AFGHANISTAN, IRAQ SOMALIA ETC. OUR SOLDIERS,DSS AND POLICE ARE IN BETTER POSITION TO HANDLE THIS MAYHEM IF PROPERLY EQUIPPED , TRAINED AND MOTIVATED . MR PRESIDENT LET US BE SERIOUS AS NATION.
ReplyDeleteWe are in serious mess should we allow USA to come to our aid. I am a Nigerian who lives abroad and have seen all sides of these westerners. Before God and man, they are fake and their governments are quite insincere. As much as I cry for the abduction of these girls and the rise in insurgents, I vehemently oppose the intervention of USA. This is awful. Nigerian security apparatus should wake up. I clearly suspect, there are insider collaborators. These insurgents will operate unabated for 5 or 12 hours or more. Is that not quite suspicious? Please read history, what are the consequences of their intervention? Remember that, they say they are helping, I do not think it will be free service. Nigeria has oil and they will dearly pay for it. I know it's an internationally conspiracy. I have always said it and I reaffirm it today, that the Hausas are very sincere and gentle people who may not hurt a fly? How come this is happening in the North? Let's face it - this is not a Nigerian issue. It's conspiracy, and God will punish all these wicked people. Fellow Nigerians, it's time now before it becomes too late: let's call on the resignation or impeachment of the president Goodluck Jonathan. He is a gentle man who is not capable of ruling Nigeria. OBJ, can you see your selfishness now? If OBJ is a true and sincere leader, how come he would give someone like this Jonathan a chance to get close to Aso rock? Or was he God that made it so? May God help us.
ReplyDeleteGood talk but if i were the president,i will accept the invitation as well because, most of our law enforcement agents are highly unpatriotic.Everybody is after money at the expense of service.Only few law enforcement agents realy wish to serve and this is just one out of 100.No matter the motivation, they will continue to ask for more as our leaders failled to show good example.Imagine nigeria law makers earning the highest salary in the whole world and expect somebody(Millitary )to go and face fire.Honesty has lost its place in the country.see Sanusi(Former CBN gov) now who made us to know all these , has been booted out because of his honesty.May Allah save us.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 11.15 ,12.39 and 12.44 are all talking rubbish America should come and help and if possible Israeli Army should come in . How could somebody be saying that the North are gentle and sincere people? In what aspect? Is it in Political , social or religious ways of life that the North has shown the gentility and sincerity? The truth of the hole matter is that the blood the northern Muslims have shed is after them . Many of them as you see them walking in the street have shed blood of innocent people . Your own Islam is it different from the one practice in the Western part of Nigeria ,Saudi Arabia and UAE?
ReplyDeleteDisregard this report it is spurious!
ReplyDeleteGentle my ass. Khalid you are not serious at all. The Christians are under attack and you sit and say USA should not intervene, so that your brothers will drink all the blood in Nigeria. evil allah worshippers
ReplyDeleteI have come to know that God said, "he would chose leaders for a country based on the type of its people". I now know why Nigeria has been having issues of bad leadership.
