The Federal Road Safety Corps, has suspended the enforcement of the new vehicle number plate and the driving licence, following two separate court judgements from Lagos and Abuja which ruled that the scheme was illegal.
The Corps has therefore directed its commanding officers to commence a nationwide public awareness on the new initiative for motor vehicle administration in the country, which would emphasise the benefits of the new scheme and the need for buy-in from all Nigerians.
A statement by the Corps Commander, Corps Public Education, Jonas Agwu in Abuja on Thursday, explained that the new directive is in line with decisions taken by the Joint Tax Board at its 129th meeting held on April 23 and 24, 2014 at the Headquarters of Edo State Internal Revenue Services in Benin.
It stated that the Board suspended the June 30, 2014 deadline earlier announced for the change to the enhanced Motor Vehicle Number Plate and the Driving Licence pending the outcome of the appeal by the FRSC.
“The States Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Vehicle Inspection Offices have been encouraged to put all necessary logistics in place to improve motor vehicle registration and issuance of driver’s licence in order to build a comprehensive database,” the statement added.
The FRSC equally directed its commanding officers to explore all available platforms such as motor park rallies, advocacy visits and other forms of public engagement in keeping with its 2014 strategic goal of improved public communication and road use education.
The corps re-affirmed that the court never vacated its statutory powers to design and produce the new number plate, “but only questioned its powers to fix deadline for enforcement of the new scheme, as confirmed by the recent directive from the Joint Tax Board which has the statutory powers to fix prices and set deadlines for implementation of the new number plate and driver’s license.”
It stated that the same position was taken by an Abuja Federal High Court which declared that the FRSC has no powers to invalidate a driver or vehicle license before its expiration. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

GOOD TO HEAR THIS
ReplyDeleteGood for Nigerians and bad for Chidoka and his gang of exploiters!. Untill they do the right thing, they will not peace!. New plate no should be for new cars and old already registered cars should be given free of charge if they MUST change tothe new plate no just as was done by CBN when new notes were introduced. Nigerians were not asked to buy new notes but just to exchange it. Greed, corruption and exploitation is what will kill some of the people in leadership positionsin this country. God will SURELY reward them all.
ReplyDeleteVery good answer, these fools will always use all crooked means to exploit fellow citizens just because they have been privileged to occupy such offices. New number plates should be for new cars and if it must be unified, then all old numbers must be replaced free of charge. Idiots!!!
Deletejust to add to Nigerians pains. I have paid N10,500 for the licence for about three months now but they refuse to issue the licence to me. fake people. they too are boko haram. anybody that inflict pains on Nigerians in one way or the order is a boko haram.
ReplyDeleteCorrect bros, they too are Boko Haram. My new driving license I completed processing since November last year is yet to be issued.

ReplyDeleteReal armed rubbers we are the one doong ourselves nobody is doing us
ReplyDeleteMumu road safety. Who are you people protecting? if i may say just, to stand there to exploit money from those who make mistake unknowingly. I was driving to Ijesha Lagos road one day just for me to cross and make a u turn to CELE, were they wrote NO U TURN and i never knew, the road safety in conjunction with the police remove the sign post and i slowed down to see if someone else will take that road but to my surprise, a public bus took the road then i had in mind that it was safe for me not knowing that they have hidden them selves one place looking for victim to extract money from on Saturday and you will never see them. They even hide their vehicle so nobody will notice but immediately i followed the commercial bus at the back the next thing i heard was a heavy siren ordering me to stop!!!!!!!. They never stopped the commercial buss and when i asked the said its not my business how they do their work, they totally behaved as if they did not see the bus in from of them instead they held me bcos i am private. To their greatest surprise they held the car of an army personnel and they did not get a penny from me. Its a big shame. 5% out of the total road safety workers are good but the rest are criminals. If you are not paid well then approach the government and hold a rally. and not inflicting pain on those struggling to even fuel their car. After i was released the sign post was put back on its position, i shook my head and i said" Nigeria" mchewwww.
