The Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, on Monday faulted statements that the Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, was created to frustrate and destabilise the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.
According to him, in 2009, his government stopped thousands of people from the enclave of radicalised Muslims in Mokwa, Niger State, which had many of the Boko Haram leaders.
He also said it was worrisome that the Federal Government had not been able to apprehend the sponsors of the violent sect five years after their destructive activities began.
Aliyu, while playing host to the Minister of State for Works, Mr. Bashir Yuguda, disclosed that the extremists should be crushed in three months, stressing that foreign countries supporting Nigeria in the fight should not stay for long.
Aliyu said, “Boko Haram did not start with the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan. Maybe that is why we have not been able to nip this in the bud because there is this believe by some people that Boko Haram was essentially created to stop Jonathan from being President. I do not think we should continue with that believe.
“I believe that might have stopped the policy in crushing Boko Haram in the right word. In this country, we must be bold to say that we must fight extremism in whatever nature, whether political, religious or social extremism, we must fight it. We must know the ground for moderation.
“It used to be like rumour but I saw an interview in print media, that ‘oh they are killing their people, let them continue to do it.’ This is a social malign that has come.”
Aliyu noted that it was wrong to compare Boko Haram with the Niger Delta militants.
He said after arresting many members of the sect, the government should have been able to establish the collaborators of the extremists.
Aliyu said, “We all know that the militants of Niger Delta were fighting for a particular purpose, which is actually a branch of the politicians who were using other people to fight to ensure that they win their elections. They realised their power and that they were used, and they intend to fight. So since money was the issue.
“But the Boko Haram, from the level of ignorance and the ideology that is involved, makes it very difficult. My argument has always been that after arresting so many members of Boko Haram for this long, what is making it difficult for us to know who are their sponsors, who are the collaborators, are the people doing this things in reality.
“We could not have spent four years or five years fighting a group, that we have not been able to crush. And whatever we do, we must realise that there is need for peace for any growth in gross domestic products.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteThere is no way you can catch a thief if the custodian of the place is the thief. Therefore if the Federal Govt cannot tell us the collaborators, the sponsors and cannot get rid of the mess, they are actually the one.

ReplyDeleteWhich sponsors are you looking for?. For your information the sponsors are the presidency and the US who are bending on dividing Nigeria in 2015. Note that over 70% funds coming to BH have been traced to the US by our intelligence agencies. Why is the governor still in the dark. Now this Alhaji from Bauchi who used to sponsor people to Plateau state to kill for Allah and the funds where traced to South Africa, Dubai, Afghanistan and a further investigation traced the original source to the US all in the disguise of polio eradication, HIV, poverty alleviation and many sorts of covers. While my fear that they have got their way through in Sudan, USSR, Germany, Korea, and have succeeded in destabilizing Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya, Yemen and many other Moslem countries who can easily be induced to violence by the power of money and false doctrine...

ReplyDeleteWhy is the Governor just saying this after all this years. He knew this all along but chose to encourage the sect as the head of the northern governors' forum. Governor Aliyu was among those who said that Boko Haram was fighting against injustice, calling on the Federal Government to grant amnesty to members of the sect. Now he is singing a different tune. He is admitting for the first time that there is a difference between militancy in the south south and the senseless agitation by the Boko Haram sect.

ReplyDeleteNigeria will remain a divided nation as far as Jonathan loyalist keep on thinking out of ignorance that Boko haram is to spoilt his administration. Boko haram starts during Yar adua time. And with the current trend if SSS will be able to trace those involved with Abuja bombing even outside Nigeria, then tell me what stops them from tracing boko haram sponsors for all this while. And one funny thing is that in Borno- Cameroon border, boko haram were attacking villages using Nigerian armour car that were deployed there during the state of emergency and when Jet came around they alway could trace them. OH boko haram have Armour car and vehicles that move faster than Nigerian airforce jet. So if we will go by what is going on in Borno, then our hands will be pointing at the top army officers in Abuja and 90% of them from South.
