Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti blamed the Peoples Democratic Party’s 15 years of misrule for the poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.
They spoke at the official presentation of the APC’s flag to Governor Kayode Fayemi by the interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, ahead of the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti.
The criticism followed the spate of blasts in the country and the abduction of over 200 pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, by the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
Reports said no fewer than 150 people died in the Tuesday’s blasts in the ever-busy Jos Terminus Market, Plateau State.
On Thursday, two schools in Bauchi State were attacked while Kano was bombed on Sunday.
A minute silence was observed at the rally in honour of victims of attacks of insurgency in Nigeria.
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, who called out governors of the APC to present their endorsement letters to Fayemi, lamented that Nigeria was going through a very difficult moment.
Referring to the Tuesday’s bombing, he said, “Many may not agree that today Nigeria is going through a very difficult moment. Let me say that a nation like Nigeria that is facing extreme danger of daily bombings, killings and blood letting should better seek the wisest cause of action and not of mourning.”
The governor, who said the party initially considered canceling the rally because of the unfortunate incident, said the gathering was for the love of democracy and to celebrate excellent performance and visionary leadership of Fayemi, and to ensure that Ekiti people did not fall victims of misrule.
A former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the APC was the cure for Nigeria’s headache, ineptitude, insecurity, poverty and unemployment.
Describing the PDP as property development party, he urged the people of the state to vote and protect their votes for Fayemi.
He said, “On the morning of election, you have nothing to fear. Don’t be afraid, go there, demand your rights, you will not have this (opportunity ) again until another four years. This is the opportunity to show your happiness and the rejection of the property development party.”
A former military Head of State and chieftain of the party, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, commended Fayemi whom he said through his achievements had demonstrated the capability of a good leader.
Fayemi said he went into politics because he believed that committed purpose-driven servant-leadership could provide people with the tools that would empower them and give them control over their own destinies.
Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, lamented that Nigeria had suffered from the misrule and misgovernance of the PDP.
He said, “We are tired and sick of their bad governance. We cannot afford to have such inept government in our nation again.
“It is a shame that our nation has been brought to its kneels. It is so painful that today we mourn and everyday we are mourning. Can we continue to have such people in government.”
He appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission to use card reader to prevent the use of fake permanent voter cards during the election.
A former National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party which merged with others to form the APC, Ogbonaya Onu assured that the “APC will bring security, peace and prosperity for our country.”
A former governor of Ekiti who dumped the PDP, Segun Oni, said “APC is a new political order for Nigeria”, adding that the PDP made an unpardonable error by choosing a former Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose, as its candidate for the June 21 governorship election.
He said, “We are not here to enthrone mediocrity but to ensure the people have a government that our children will benefit from and will be proud of. Anybody who I cannot point to as a role model for my own children or for the good children of Ekiti, I will never endorse such a person.”
He urged the people should vote Fayemi and avoid a return to the days of poultry project and murder of opponents.
The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, urged the voters to vote against an “impeached, rejected and tried candidate.”
Others at the event included the governor’s wife, Bisi, Governors Ahmed Abdulfatah (Kwara), Tanko Almakura (Nasarawa), Raji Fashola (Lagos), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); deputy governors Titi Laoye-Tomori (Osun) and Prof. Modupe Adelabu (Ekiti). ReplyDeleteAll the commentators here are partisan and sentimental. It shows how the politicians have succeeded in their ploy to capture the reasoning of citizens without bothering on the actual matter on table. I think it is always good to take issue and comment along with what the report portends. Most of the rally reports, more often than not, failed to tell us the manifestos of any of the parties rather they bring out the abuses, blames and counter blames uttered in such gathering. Personally, I want to appeal to Nigerian Eye to drop all these unimportant reports that we have been hearing since the days of UPGA, NCNC etc and feeds us with the substance issues to facilitate sensible evaluation. This might be the result of dwindling educational system in our country.
