56 Nyanya blast victims still in hospital

About 56 injured victims of the two bomb blasts, which rocked the Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja within two weeks are still in hospitals.

At the National Hospital in Abuja, Dr. Tayo Haastrup said on Friday in an interview with a source, "They are about 23 in all, (both first and second blast victims). They are fine and responding to treatment very well."

The Head (Public Relations Unit), Health and Human Services Secretariat of the FCT, Mr. Badiru Yakassai, gave a breakdown of victims in other hospitals. According to Yakassai, there are six victims at Maitama General Hospital, while an unnamed hospital in Gwarinpa has three victims.

Others are Wuse General Hospital with five victims (three from the last blast and two from the first one); Asokoro General Hospital 19 victims (10 of them from the first bomb blast and nine from second).

"They are improving and doing very well, that is why the number is reducing and many of them are being discharged", he stated.

Meanwhile, the National Blood Transfusion Services has called on the public to donate blood, saying blood is never enough.

The Communications Officer of NBTS, Mr. Abdullahi Haruna, said Nigerians should not wait till emergency situations before donating blood to avoid unnecessary pressure.

He said safe blood was never enough, adding that besides the bomb  incident, people accessed blood every day.

He said, "There are pregnant women, anaemic patients, accident victims and people who undergo surgery. All these people require blood and it is never enough to have adequate blood in the blood bank. Coming to donate blood during emergencies is not the ideal thing to do because it puts the system under pressure.

"Blood is supposed to be available for people to use anytime. As people are donating, you won't just take the blood and transfuse directly to the patients. It has to be screened and clinically purified before use. The time it takes to process the blood donated in the period of emergency is enough for an injured person to give up.

"Realistically or ideally, it is necessary that people should always donate blood before emergency happens. It's just like going to the bank to take money.

It is not until there is an emergency that we deposit and take the money immediately. Blood donation is like depositing your money in the bank, so that when you need it, any day, anytime, you can easily access it."
