Zamfara: Fulani herdsmen endorse peace deal

The Fulani herdsmen, farmers and the Vigilante Association in Zamfara State, have signed a peace agreement after two years of crises leading to the killings of several people and destruction of property worth millions of Naira.

The peace process was brokered by the committee led by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Michael Zuokomor, weekend, at Gusau, the state capital.

Part of the peace agreement noted that the parties had been "living peacefully and co-existing with each other over a long period of time and are referred to as Hausa/Fulani because of their common tradition and social relationship.

"But recently, there have been serious cases of crises between them which led to great loses of lives and property.

Because of the incessant crises, the state government on its part and in order to curtail the menace, established a reconciliation committee to look into the remote cause of this problem and proffer solutions for peace to reign.

Despite efforts of well meaning stakeholders, the crises persisted and as a result, many people especially Fulani have fled their homes en-masse for fear of attack.

Resolutions: "Further to the meeting presided over by the Michael Zuokomor, with representatives of farmers, Fulani and Vigilante association, it was unanimously resolved as follows that: having realized the negative consequences as a result of enormous loss of lives and properties, all stakeholders involved in the peace initiatives, resolved to call on all aggrieved parties to give peace a chance.

"That all the parties involved are calling on the state governor to seriously undertake a critical screening and verification of the present membership of the state vigilante group.
"That this should involve the participation of the police and other relevant bodies in order to flush out bad eggs among them. Also the parties involved have endorsed the idea of overhauling the vigilante group with a view to ensuring participation of all other sister associations (Fulani and Farmers) into the group for homogeneity and representations.

"That training and re-training should be given on regular basis to members of the Vigilant group to increase their efficiency, by making it operate alongside the Nigeria Police and other security agencies."
