Barely one week after Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan expressed concern over marauding herdsmen in Delta State communities, the state Police Command says it has recovered a military rifle and live ammunition believed to have been abandoned by fleeing herdsmen, following a police chase.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Celestine Kalu, in a statement, said: “Following a distress call that some armed men were seen in Okpara bush, a team from the Isiokolo Division swiftly mobilised to the scene where six armed herdsmen were found.
“The herdsmen, after trying to use their cows to frighten the policemen to no avail, opened fire on the team and escaped. When the bush was combed, one AK 50 military rifle with S/No. BW 2748 and 152 rounds of live ammunition believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing herdsmen, were recovered.”
Kalu added that investigation was in progress, while efforts were on to track down the fleeing criminals.
In a related incident, the Delta State Police Command has shot and killed a suspected armed robber while allegedly attempting to escape from custody at the Police ‘B’ Division, Warri.
Kalu explained that the late robbery suspect, Akporobo Oyibode, was among a gang of four caught robbing a business centre last Wednesday on Okere/Ugborikoko Road, Warri, by men of the Warri ‘B’ Divison. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
