The Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, has arraigned a 34-year-old man, Sikiru Yusuf, aka Apako, before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court for the alleged murder of Kazeem Bamgboye.
Bamgboye, a final year student of Kwara State Polytechnic, was on a visit to his parents for school funds, when he was struck on the head with an iron rod at Doyin Bust Stop, in the Orile Iganmu area of the state.
The defendant was caught two years after committing the crime through community effort.
It was learnt that on the day of the incident, there had been a fight between gangs in Adeleye and Alhaji Jimoh streets in which arms and ammunition were used by both sides.
The victim, who was going for a birthday party and was waiting to board a bus, was said to have been attacked by Yusuf with an iron rod.
Yusuf, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was said to have struck the victim with a rake in the head several times. Bamgboye died from the injuries.
Yusuf was said to have relocated shortly after to Iyana Iba where he began a new life with his family, with the hope of evading arrest.
However, he was said to have occasionally sneaked into the community to visit his aged mother who resided on Alhaji Jimoh Street.
It was learnt that the local vigilance group apprehended him during one of such visits, and handed him over to the police.
He was arraigned on one count of murder.
The charge reads, “That you, Sikiru Yusuf (alias Akapo) on April 25, 2012, at about 9am, at Doyin Bus Stop, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District,, did unlawfully kill one Kazeem Bamgboye, aged 27 years, by smashing his head with iron rod and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
