Osun PDP, APC trade words over planned mayhem

THE ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State and the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday traded words over alleged plot to assassinate an unnamed governorship aspirant before the August 9 election in the state.

While PDP accused APC of plotting to assassinate one of the governorship aspirants who contested against its gubernatorial candidate Senator Iyiola Omisore in the April 5 governorship primary of the party, the APC said the PDP was just revealing its plans to cause mayhem in the state.

This came as Senator Omisore alleged plot by the APC to destabilise the peace of the state ahead of the August 9 governorship election through killing of PDP members, while APC insisted Omisore was well known for violence and killings.

The PDP, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Prince Bola Ajao said “we are aware of their many cruel machinations to put a wedge between our candidate and his lawful governorship pursuit, knowing full well that he looks unstoppable. Ordinarily, one would have discarded this with a wave of hand as a ruse, but with the desperation being exhibited by the sinking Aregbesola’s government in its attempt to stage manage a come-back even when they themselves are aware that they have lost credibility and are out of favour with the Osun voting public. The penchant of Aregbesola’s government for dastardly acts makes it more worrisome.”

Also, Omisore in a statement by his Director of Media and Strategy, Mr Diran Odeyemi claimed he had received series of text messages about plans by some APC leaders to kill a PDP governorship aspirant to make it look as if the killing was as a result of rivalry over the gubernatorial primary election just conducted by the party.

Reacting, APC in a statement by its Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, described the allegation as a concoction designed to conceal the intention of PDP and Omisore, saying Omisore had a history of violence.

He said “Whatever the PDP and Omisore are accusing the APC of is uncharacteristic of the APC, but it is the characteristic of Omisore in politics of Osun State. Omisore’s political style is surrounded by violence and killing of innocent people. In whose interest will the killing of any PDP governorship aspirant be?” he asked, stressing that Omisore was only exposing his hidden agenda through the allegation.

Stop blackmailing INEC, APC tells PDP

Meanwhile, APC in Osun State, yesterday called on the PDP to stop “its serial blackmail” and threat against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that except the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the State, Dr Rufus Akeju was replaced, the party would not consider the August 9 election credible.

APC described this stance as a blatant attempt by the PDP to corrupt the electoral process by arm-twisting INEC to replace a man the PDP had allegedly found impossible to manipulate with one that would do its bidding during the August 9 poll.

Oyatomi said it was the PDP itself that stalled the court process which was attempting to determine the truth or otherwise of that party’s allegation against the State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner.
