Lagos to build seven-floor car park at Onikan

The Lagos State Government says it has begun the building of an ultra-modern seven-floor car park at Onikan on Lagos Island.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Obafemi Hamzat, announced this during the ministry’s 2014 Press Briefing on Wednesday in Alausa.

Mr. Hamzat said the car park, which would accommodate 700 vehicles at a time, was to cater for the increasing population at Onikan.

He said the project, being handled by DKR Associates, would have an administrative complex to make the administration of the facility easier.

“The mega city status of Lagos confers on it the need to manage its challenges. One of such is the issue of parking space.

“Within the Lagos Central Business District, there are varieties of parking places that invoke the semblance of an unplanned city.

“To address the issue, the car park facility building was conceived,” he said.
He, however, said that the project would be managed by the private sector.

Mr. Hamzat also urged residents to take ownership of all road asset in the state by protecting them against damage and vandalism.

He said residents had a moral responsibility to ensure the durability of roads as they were built to serve their movement needs.

“It is always wrong for people to expect that it is the responsibility of government to protect roads in the state.

“Roads are built from tax payers’ money, to serve the needs of all residents who use them.
“It is therefore expected of residents to ensure that the roads are protected from damage and vandalism, as they own the infrastructure,” he said.

On the Fourth Mainland Bridge, Mr. Hamzat said the fact that the project had not started did not mean it had been jettisoned.

He said the government was still working on the feasibility of the project and would begin work as soon as that had been concluded.
