Fire guts bank, factory, others in Lagos



Emergency officials were busy all through the weekend as fire ravaged several homes, companies and vehicles in several areas in Lagos.

It was learnt that fire gutted a branch of Access Bank at Ojo Alaba on Sunday. Firemen were said to have spent no fewer than four hours at the scene.


While that was happening, fire also gutted a furniture company on Ifosi Road, Iyana-Ejigbo in the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area.

It was learnt that around the same time, an apartment building in Ozolua Staff Quarters, the University of Lagos, also caught fire.

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, told our correspondent that there were no casualties in all the fire cases.

Fadipe said his agency responded to no fewer than 10 fire cases between Saturday and Sunday.

He said, “Around 10.35am on Sunday, we received a distress call that there was fire at a staff quarters in UNILAG. The fire started from the bedroom of a lecturer on the first floor of the three-storey building. It was caused by an electricity surge.

“Around 12.05, we received a distress call that there was a fire outbreak at Access Bank. We were not quickly alerted so the whole building was smoke-clogged. The fire started from the ICT department. We are still battling it.

“Also, there was a serious fire at a Bella Furniture Factory at Ejigbo. Six shops were burnt while five were not affected. It took several hours for us to put it ou
