Femi Fani-Kayode warns APC against all Muslims ticket in 2015

A former Minister of Aviation, who is also a member of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has warned the leadership of the APC against fielding Muslims as both its presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the 2015 elections, saying doing so would make the party lose the poll.

Fani-Kayode, in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, said an all Muslims ticket would offend the Christian community in the country.

He said, “I have said it privately in countless political meetings and I will say it publicly today.

“Please mark it, the biggest mistake that my party, the APC, can make is to field a Muslim/Muslim ticket in the 2015 Presidential election.

“If we do that we will not only offend the Christian community but we will also lose the election woefully.”

He said it would be wrong for the APC to think that what happened in 1993, when the winner of the June 12 presidential poll Chief Moshood Abiola, who was a Muslim, paired with Amb. Babagana Kingibe, another Muslim on the ticket of the defunct Social Democratic Party.

Fanikayode, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC, said it would also be wrong to present a Christian/Christian ticket.

He said, “This is not 1993 and whether we like it or not we must accept the fact that religion plays a major role in our politics today.

“Our party must have both a Christian and a Muslim on the ticket if we want to be taken seriously in the presidential election. I implore those that think otherwise to sit down and think this through properly.

“We must not present a Christian/Christian ticket as this would be insensitive to the feelings of Muslims and we must not present a Muslim/Muslim ticket as this would be insensitive to the feelings of Christians.”

He said the country belonged to both Muslims and Christians and that the feelings of the practitioners of both religions must be taken into consideration.

The former minister, who also served as an aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said, “Let us be mindful of our actions, deeds and words, no matter how well-intentioned they may be, and let us ensure that we do not confirm the terrible stereotyping that those that are against us are trying to label us with.”

    2. We need change. But I won't vote for a duck or dog. I need a candidate that I can risk my precious vote for. GMB is a good man, but he had his chance. Ttinubu is not bad, but he's clannish. Both men are too old for TODAY's Nigeria. They're elder statemen who shd be playing advisory rloles instead of vieing for tickets. When will the youths have their shotss when those in their 50s are not given the chance? When will tomorrooow ever come ffor youths to lead? What happened to Fashola, Ribadu, Oshiomole, Rochas Okorocha, even El-Rufai, etc. When wwe said we need change, what we meean is tthat we need new faces. And new methods. By the way, what can my respected Buhari do that my respected Ribadu cannot do? PAIR RIBADU WITH OSHIOMOLE and let's see how it plays out. Or Pair Fashola with Rochas Okorocha, or Fashola with Oshiomole. Then do everything and see the change we need. I'm a south-southener. I hate PDP witth passion, I can't vote for GMB/Tinubu pair. That pair is not the chhange we want to see. They will fail before they start campaining.

  5. NE why are your news always spring up religious tension in the mind of readers? For crying out loud, where has Fani-Kayode warned against all muslim tickets in the content? I suppose he is only canvassing for religious fairness. More so, his comments is not as bigotry as your headline.

  13. Truly the standard of education is at its lowest. Just read the comments of people contributing to this write up. GEJ and PDP are not responsible for the fallen standard but what have they done to improve our standard of education since 1999? Should we continue like this?

  14. This is one man's opinion. The man is a part of this failed administration. May you should all thing for youselves and let Nigerians decide if they want a Muslim, Christian, or traditionalist. The truth is we need people who are God fearing not hypocrites

  15. Lot of claims and no fact. Why are comments so one sided. It seems to me that most of the points relayed in this forum are split between Muslims/Christians and North and South. The one fact that I know is that the current president has failed the country. Forget about your sentiment about the splits I mentioned above. We need people at the elm of our leadership that will produce positive result in Nigeria. The fish rot from head. For me, these are the list of the things that Nigeria need: The president must make war against corruption the ultimate cause. 2. Invest in infrastructure like interstate road network and constant power supply. 3. Make our justice system work to the point where citizens can at least trust the system. Knowing that no one is above the law. Reforming the justice system must also include letting each state control its police force. 4. Lastly, invest in the education of our Children. Are these things possible in Nigeria regardless what tribe or religion the president is coming from. I am very optimistic that this will be the case very soon.

  18. @ Otokpa, what are these people about? What are the things they plan to do make Nigeria work better? I live in the USA and not familiar with these names for President and Vice Pres. as you mentioned. Are these people about fighting corruption? I mean serious intent and plan to fight corruption. Can they seriously prosecute the people that have stolen from the people? Until we can get a leader that is taking the fight against corruption serious, please don't fool yourselves.
