Ahead of the coming Easter celebrations and carnival, the Police in Lagos have assured the residents of adequate security throughout the festivities saying every measure has been put in place by the security agencies to ensure the safety of the people.
Briefing newsmen after the week’s State Security Council meeting presided over by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), the State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Mr. Tunde Sobulo, said the Police has deployed security personnel everywhere including the entry points into the State.
Sobulo, who said not only the Police are involved in the exercise, added, “There are also mobile, anti-terrorists, and plain clothes men all on ground, on the express roads and major roads and they are monitoring”.
He said the Police have erected several checkpoints across the State to make monitoring easier asking residents to bear with security agencies for the inconveniences the development may cause.
“We are putting a lot of measures in place to keep away terrorists from the State. We have deployed security agencies. All our entry points are now covered, not only with the regular police but with other security personnel and mobile; we have put up a lot of checkpoints, people have to bear with us”, he said.
The Police boss, however, urged members of the civil society to close ranks and join the Police in the fight against crime and terrorism pointing out that the people have a role to inform the Police or other security agencies when and wherever they suspect that crime is being committed or has been committed.
“Call us on the toll free numbers (112, 767). They should be observant, the communities, the neighbourhoods, they should all be vigilant and observant. At motor parks and roadsides, if a vehicle is parked for too long unattended to, they should report to the Police and other security agencies”.
“If a vehicle is parked in your neighbourhood for more than two days unattended, call the attention of the police. What we are saying is give us information. Luckily, most of our bridges now have light”, Sobulo said.
On the Easter Carnivals, the Deputy Police Commissioner said Police has put measures in place to secure participants and observers adding, however, that with some information from the Ministry of Tourism some of the arrangements are being modified or replaced. “We have put things on the ground but with the information coming from the Ministry of Tourism, we are amending certain things”.
“But I can tell you there is going to be adequate security. So people should come out and enjoy themselves. I am assuring them there will be no problem”, he said.
Deputy Police Commissioner Sobulo was accompanied at the briefing by the Commander Air Force Base, Ikeja, Air Commodore A. Adedoyin, Commander 9 Mechanized Brigade, Brigadier-General A.S. Malkobi, Director State Security Service, Mr. Ben Olayi, Commander NNS Beecroft, Olokun, Apapa, Navy Commodore Ovenseri Emmanuel Uwadiae and Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox (rtd).
