The Defence Headquarters on Wednesday said that a group of terrorists, operating under the guise of herdsmen at a camp in the outskirts of Wukari in Taraba, had been arrested.
It said other members of the group were killed during an encounter with the military at a check point at Gindin Dorowa, a suburb of Wukari.
The military disclosed this in a statement issued by Major-General Chris Olukolade, the Director of Defence Information, in Abuja.
Olukolade said that one of the arrested armed men confessed to being a combatant for the terrorist group in Borno and was recently brought to Wukari area in furtherance of their mission.
“Assorted arms and ammunition were recovered from them. Other members of the group were sighted in the course of air surveillance and later trailed to their camp where they engaged the troops in a battle.
“The terrorists were clad in the usual pattern of dress of their counterparts operating in Borno and Yobe states,” he said.
The defence spokesman said that the curfew imposed on Wukari and its environs would be relaxed as normalcy had returned to the town.
He said troops would continue to patrol the area while a house-to-house search for arms was ongoing.
According to him, troops patrolling the Lake Chad Islands had also made some arrests, including a boat operator who ferried terrorists across the lake.
He said some of the suspects confessed to being suppliers of hard drugs to the terrorist groups in the area. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
