Two South African police officers who were allegedly caught on video taking part in the beating and stripping of an unarmed Nigerian on a Cape Town street have been arrested, the police watchdog said on Saturday.
Watch video below...
The Independent Police Directorate said the officers, aged 42 and 45 years old, would appear in court on Monday on charges of assault.
On Friday, video footage showing two armed uniformed policemen and private guards punching and kicking a man on a Cape Town street went viral, prompting public outrage.
The Nigerian was named Clement Emekensha.
“The arrest would not have happened without the vigilance of the public,” said Moses Dlamini, the spokesman for the police watchdog.
He said other charges may be added.
In the video, a security guard ripped the shirt-less man’s trousers off and then a police officer repeatedly punched and kicked the man in the groin. Another officer held the man by the neck.
His underpants came off as the beating continued, before he was loaded into a police car.
Western Cape police said the guards had not yet been arrested.
South Africa’s police are frequently embroiled in allegations of brutality, yet prosecutions rarely occur.
Last year, Mozambican national Mido Macia, died after being dragged behind a moving police patrol van in a town east of Johannesburg.
Nine officers are standing trial for his killing. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

We do worst than that to ourselves here in Nigeria, so what the news all about? Is it because it is South African?
ReplyDeleteTo say u are a fool.is the least. Does that make it right?
DeleteHow many times have we heard of the 'brutal' SA police met such punishment on Americans and germans? Damn it! We are all drains to their economy we all know is better than ours, they hate our going there to leach on them and it is vented via unfair treatment with an un written note "go home to your damned economy or accept whatever we throw at you, dogs!" If we were from a robust place, they will be shining our shoes. That brutality indirectly came from aso rock.
DeleteTo say the person that commented that 'We do worst than that to ourselves here in Nigeria, so what the news all about? Is it because it is South African?" is a fool is really an understatement. No dictionary has the word to qualify the kind of person he is. Stupid comment. They are beating your country man and that stupid comment of yours is the only thing your brain could think of.
DeleteGod punish u and ur family, idiot wicked fool! Bcos he is nt ur broda d stupid police shld kill him abi? Goat!

Delete@Onaivi who shall our Ibo brothers report this matter to then? AU? UN? Recollect that when Fashola 'deported' Ibo vagrants back to Anambra, His excellency, Gov. Peter Ob reported him to His Excellency, President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR.
DeleteMy brother barbarism and brutality should not be condoned.Becuase it happens in Naija and nothing happens to some of the perpertrators doesnt mean it should go on unabated here in Naija and elswhere, especially where the law is being respected.I understand your anger and fury but if we Naijas can be bold and smart to get this criminal and brutal behaviour of our police men on video, upload it for channels TV or youtube, and the perpertator captured through the video footage and prosecuted,I am sure these animals in police uniforms will desist from their distardly acts.
ReplyDeleteAll those people talking rubbish about nigeria should be careful no matter what is our brother dat they treated that way for what reason
ReplyDeleteUseless 9ja government, they aren't ready to fight for you. No matter what the man had done for the fact that he is already apprehended the next thing is to take him to the police station possibly you charge him to court.
ReplyDeleteAllover the world, they have no single respect for Nigerians because they know no body is ready to talk on your behalf nor to fight for you; they are not even hearing anything good about 9ja government.
Here in Nigeria, ordinary Indian or Lebanese man would treat you anyhow and nothing happens. If you go to police the Police only take bribe from them then you are your own.
This is brutality in highest order, we must say no to this. Nigerian govt must intervene in this matter. The victim so said is a Nigerian and we must protect his rights. It is wrong for any law enforcement personnel to display such callousness on a fellow human being. It can be anybody so let's fight it now!
ReplyDeleteHear the name of the victim Emekensha, from which part of Nigeria is that name ? Check the international passport and compare with the name he is called here before leaving for SA.
ReplyDeleteNigerians na wa o
Yes our brother was treated wrongly, barbarism is bad and should be discouraged, the point here or the reason for most of these acts is the fact that our country is a rare, strange sort or a useless one(pardon me) due to way and manners its been governed.
ReplyDeleteMost pple out there don't like Nigerians, the hate we generate from other climes in this world can be compared or are in ranks with that of Afghanistan, pakistan and iraqis although those countries are been feared cz of their terrorism nature but for Nigerians, we are feared of all vices from 419 to corruption, kidnapping, drugs etc all this are expected way or the other from any Nigerian community outside this country so there is a lot of hate out there for a typical Nigerian. If you ve been out of the country a few times even if its within Africa on a summary u can conclude that Nigeria has an image issues.
All these hatred towards Nigerians can only go away or be lessened if the leaders are ready to change if not this is what we will always get. Tell me can the SA police do that to an American or an English man even if they commit a crime?will they be treated this manner? So bottom line the leaders must develop this country, create employment for the youths, electricity etc if not issues like this will always stays at our door step.
Mark
The fellow is 'lucky'! If it was Nigerian Police, in his own country, Nigeria, he would have been shot dead in broad daylight with an AK47 and nothing would come out of it.
ReplyDeleteThe South African Government and its officers do not respect Nigeria or its citizens and I won't be surprise if our foreign affairs fails to do anything. I strongly condem this dastardly act and call for a very serious petition to our Government.
