Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday, signed thestate 2014 budget into law, assuring Deltans that his administration was poised to finish strong, hence more money would be spent on capital projects with a view to completing ongoing projects.
He signed the budget of N451 billion, comprising N161.74 billion or 36 percent of the total budget for recurrent expenditure while N289.2 billion or 64 percent for capital expenditure.
Initially, the governor had presented N391.51 billion budget proposal for the 2014 fiscal year budget of ‘Consolidation, Sustainable Economic Growth And Development,’ comprising of N159.78 billion or 48.8 per cent for recurrent expenditure and N231.72 billion or 59.1 per cent for capital expenditure to the state lawmakers.
But in passing the budget, the lawmakers increased it with N59 billion. Uduaghan, while signing the budget into law, explained that “capital expenditure was higher than recurrent in this year’s budget as the state government in the last few years had tried to control recurrent expenditure, so as to free up more funds for capital projects so we are spending more on capital projects as this is what the people benefit from directly.”
Also signed into law, yesterday were three other bills passed by the state House of Assembly, namely, the Delta State Local Government Bill 2013; Delta State Security Fund Bill, 2013 and the Renumerations, Salaries, Gratuities and Allowances of other Public Officers Bill, 2013.
