Police station, court, primary school razed; scores killed in Adamawa

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents, weekend, attacked a police station, court, primary school and three churches in Fota Village, Lala District at Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, during which 10 people including seven police men were feared killed.
Sources from the area indicated that, the gunmen struck from several directions in the village, shooting indiscriminately.
Apart from the policemen, six other villagers were killed by the terrorists, who reportedly operated for several hours unchallenged. Three of the deceased villagers were killed at a wedding ceremony in Bisir village.
”When they arrived Fota at about 9p.m. Saturday, they headed straight to the police station and set it ablaze; thereafter they torched the Area Court Building and a block of classrooms at Fota Primary School,” a youth leader from the village said.
’’The gunmen drove in dozens in a convoy of Hilux vehicles, motorcycles, among others, chanting, Allahu Akbar, (God is great) several times before fleeing after the the attack.
The residents said that troops were later deployed as many villagers were said to have slept in hilltops.
Another source from the area, who also pleaded anonymity said that, the terrorists were those fleeing from Sambista Forest in Borno State, following military onslaught in the area.
”They must be members of Boko Haram sect fleeing from Sambista forest as a result of the recent military onslaught there,” the source explained.
Reports said that the policemen at the station were killed after about 30 minutes of gun-fire, pointing out that one of the attackers was critically wounded during the operation, but he was taken away by the attackers.
It was alleged that the insurgents, had after attacking Fota, made a stop-over at a nearby Bisir village, where they attacked another wedding party, killing some people while many others sustained injuries.
’’While we are about to round -up, the celebration, we just started hearing gun shots and before you know one of the invitees was shot died, with many sustaining bullet wounds. At least eight persons were rushed to hospital for treatment,’’ one of the sources added.
When contacted, the Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muhammed Ibrahim confirmed the attack but declined further comments.
Similarly, the Army Public Relations Officer at the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Captain Jafaru Nuhu confirmed the incident but did not speak on the number of casualties.
