The Federal Road Safety Commission in Abuja on Thursday, said it would appeal against the verdict of the Federal High Court in Lagos, that the new number plates introduced by the commission were unconstitutional and as such could not be imposed on vehicle owners.
In a statement, issued by the FRSC Public Education Officer, Mr Jonas Agwu, in Abuja, it said it did not set the deadline for the use of the new number plate but the states, through their Joint Tax Board, fixed the deadline.
The court, presided over by Justice James Tsoho, had declared that the new number plates introduced by the commission were unconstitutional and as such could not be imposed on vehicle owners.
“The issue of redesigning new number plates by the respondent is not covered under the provision of any law in Nigeria.
“The respondent cannot force Nigerians to acquire the new number plates by impounding cars without the backing of any legislation to that effect,” the judge said.
Agwu, however, said that the court only ruled that the commission lacked statutory authority to fix a deadline for the enforcement of the use of the new number plate.
It said it would appeal the verdict of the court.
“Justice Tsoho ruled that the FRSC has powers to design and produce the number plate as a national policy.
“The judge cautioned that the statutory powers of the FRSC does not cover setting deadlines for conversion to the newly designed plates,” the statement quoted Agwu as saying.
The Joint Board had set June 30 as deadline for vehicle owners to change the old number plate to the new number plate or have their vehicles impounded. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

FRSC is angry cos the plan to share the loot is not being threatened. Thank Judge for coming the the defence of the defenceless but highly exploited nigerians even in their fatherland
ReplyDeleteIf some people are blaming GEJ i wl just be imagine president can not be listen to everytin at the same time when this useless people where render useless then during military rule nobody no them now they want to proof they are now somebody when they brought out this issue am imagin the useless people we call our representaive in the house to intervain but we did not hear anytin frm them ......i wonder why this people are there to represent us
ReplyDeleteour leaders are so wicked and senseless what's wrong with the old plate numbers? or does this new plate number have tracking chips to locate stolen cars I guess no just a means to Stael money and suffer the common man.
ReplyDeleteWelldone Judge..
ReplyDeleteI use to admire the FRSC men not until they decided to start exploiting Nigerians..
The plans of FRSC is to impoverish the masses. They have the same agenda as the immigration. If given the opportunity, they can also kill Nigerians with riffles. Why do the leaders of this country hate their own?
i wonder what are appealing for, when the court pronounced that there is no law in Nigeria backing forcing people to change their plate numbers.
ReplyDeleteUseless men in uniform. Lets wait and see. Pls transfer all of them to Maiduguri to start from there.
ReplyDeletei wonder why, people in this country find it difficult to believe that every Nigerian are struggling to use a car.
ReplyDeleteBesides, car is no longer a luxury but a necessity. I have never seen a country that desire and enjoy putting unnecessary burden on the people. At this time when men find it difficult to make ends meet. Is it someone who was sacked from work and is using his car for transport to make ends meet. after a futile search for job can afford that, when he has big bill to contend with. i beg let's have a rethink and change the policy to as when you can afford it,beside, is not good for now as we are approaching election period.
Don't mind them they want to still quickly before 2015 when their term will end.
ReplyDeleteLet the idiots appear with his personal money ....not with taxpayers money.
ReplyDeleteCourt has spoken
Thanks to you all. The questions needed to be answered by the FRSC are: 1.) What is the advantage of this new plate number over the previous one? 2.) Of what security value or risk is the numbering system poses to vehicle owners?
ReplyDelete3.) Is there any difference between the numbers of vehicles that each type can ragister? FRSC should ask the mathematicians among them to work it out. If not, they should seek for the service of a combinatorial mathematician to work it out and compare the limits of each type. I bet it if there ever going to be any difference.
Our law makers are indirectly in support of the new plate numbers only that they don't want to come out and make their stands known. They are doing underground work so that the new plate numbers can be imposed on us. Once, they are able to force this bitter pills down our throat, their take home will greatly increased, because the order of the day is "SHARE THE MONEY!".
We, motorists/nigerians are the one that will and must refuse to smell not to talk of swallowing this their bitter pills.
Our leaders and stakeholders are pushing us to where we will turn back to them. Thanks to judiciary in this aspect. I don't think there is any one with a good sense of reasoning in FRSC bcos i can't visualize the different between the old and so called new plate number, just the inter-change of the alphabet and the map. Please let us ask our selves, when our leaders will stop extorting, maltreating and enslaving us and i know that they will never stop untill when we put an end to it by ourselves. Just hoping for revolution to happen, then they will all know that they are in real problem. God has left naija but we need to take laws into our hands. REVOLUTION is the answer where we erase them all
ReplyDeleteAnswer to this question and I will deduce fact: FRSC is bleeding to go to appeal court to overt-turn the judgement of Fed High Court to repeal the imposition of new plate number on Nigerians, of what significance is the new n#? Who is the FRSCN representing and fighting for in her intended appeal? One major reason why the lower class in Nigeria remains poor is bcs the privileged in the corridor of power not minding that the commoners are fending for them impose countless levies, charges, extortions etc on them for self enrichment. Cut suya cut suya na for cow body. FRSC please leave the judgement as it is if you have the interest of the helpless Nigerians at heart.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen gullible community like Nigerian. Whatever nonsense policy imposed on us by the so-called leaders, we take it hook, line and sinker. If not for the person like Barr. Ebun Onagoruwa that went to court to challenge the useless toll imposed on users of Ikoyi-Lekki bridge by the Lagos State Government, we will still continue to moan. Unless we go the way suggested by anonymous 12.29pm, we will continue to suffer and smile.
ReplyDeleteIts unfortunate osita d frsc bos is taking us for granted.where did he tinks he wants to take this money to? Hell fire of course.let him be careful God is fighting for this country .We know he has perfected d sharing formula wit d national asembly that is why they are not saying anyting.
