Jonathan promises wealth creation, infrastructure in North East

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Bauchi promised that the Federal Government would provide opportunities for the creation of wealth and infrastructure in the North East zone of the country.

Jonathan made the pledge at the PDP North East unity rally in Bauchi.

He said that the government was doing everything possible to deal with the security challenges bedevilling the zone.

According to him, the government appreciates the fact that the zone is facing serious security challenges.

He said government would tackle the security challenges in the country to guarantee free movement of Nigerians.

“Boko Haram in the North East, Kidnapping in the South South or Armed Robbery in the South East, we must bring them to a reasonable control,” he said.

He said that PDP was the only party that could guarantee democracy, adding that there was no ”godfather” in PDP.

The president said out of the total number of politicians regarded as mobilisers in Nigeria, 60 per cent were PDP members.

Jonathan, however, acknowledged that the party had some issues that led to it losing some states to opposition parties.

In his speech, Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State, said that members of the PDP in the zone were solidly behind the Federal Government.

According to him, the PDP government in the state (Bauchi) has done a lot of positive projects that has improved on the lives of the people.

He appealed to the Federal Government to commence work on the Kafin-Zaki Dam, adding that the dam, if completed, would provide jobs for about two million people.

Yuguda said that apart from the jobs to be created, the dam would also provide for the production of two million tonnes of rice, one million tonne of wheat and other agricultural produce.

He also called on the Federal Government to help in combating desert encroachment in the North East zone and rehabilitate the railway service.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was graced by ministers, legislators, governors, top PDP executives and politicians from within and outside the zone.

NAN also reports that security was tight at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, venue of the event.

  4. Two million jobs from a dam project. Is this man a fool or what. Deal with the thieves in your administration such as Diezani. That is where the resource for job creation will come from, not from a dam project. Also, where else in the world except in primitive Nigeria do you hear about dams being built?

  7. The sincere truth is this, The politicians appointed into positions are not ready to and willing to create jobs. If they are serious about 3 months is more then enough time to see the dividend. South Africa has set aside funds (Grants and Loans) to entrepreneurs. If you've got a wonderful business Idea, that gives you access to this fund. Nigerian President can make this achievable in Nigeria, but him and his ministers prefer using this funds to but private jets and amerce so much wealth for their 15th generation to come.

  8. The useless desert dam project is nothing but a pink elephant designed to enable some corrupt officials, politicians and their cronnies to sink their dubious fingers in our collective resource pie. May God forbid it.
