The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has said the commission is concerned about the security challenges in the country.
He, however, states that INEC is hopeful that things can improve to such an extent that it would be able to conduct elections without hitches.
He spoke in Ilorin on Wednesday while delivering a lecture on Challenges of Fraud- free election under democratic dispensation organised by the Mustapha Akanbi Foundation.
He stated that budget for INEC was a major challenge.
Jega said, “I must say it is a serious challenge. What the budget office presented as an envelope, we had a prior discussion before that envelope was brought to the National Assembly.
“As Mr. Speaker, (Aminu Tambuwal) rightly said, that budget is actually a fraction of what we need to conduct that election.”
He stated that If INEC had to keep on improving the integrity of the election, it also had to incur necessary expenditure in that process.
He said the commission had to engage ad-hoc staff.
“We have to pay them allowances, we have to transport them or give them transport allowance. We have to provide what we call lunch allowance to security agencies. We have to procure ballot papers with security details and we also have to procure result sheet in addition to ballot papers and ballot boxes and all those non-sensitive materials that are required to hold elections.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
