There was gridlock on Lagos roads, yesterday, which lasted for hours as over 1,000 part-time students across various higher institutions of learning took over the roads, protesting ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and that of College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU.
The students were drawn from University of Lagos, UNILAG; Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH; Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH; Ilaro Polytechnic and Ede Polytechnic, among others.
The students carried placards with inscriptions, chanting solidarity songs as they headed towards Maryland bus stop from the junction in front of UNILAG.
The protest which started at 9am and ended at 3pm, also involved Educational Rights Campaign, ERC. Policemen, officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and other law enforcement agents were on patrol while the protest lasted.
One commuter said: “It is rather unfortunate that this traffic hold up is a result of students’ protest. If they want to protest against the strike, they should have done that on the premises of their schools or go to the seat of power instead of causing untold hardship to innocent citizens.”
