Owing to the spate of Boko Haram attacks on schools in the North East, the Federal Government has shut down five Federal Unity Colleges in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states.
Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, communicated the approval in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, on Wednesday in Abuja.
The decision followed reports submitted by the principals of the unity schools in the three states.
Violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, last Tuesday attacked Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State, killing no fewer than 30 students.
The affected schools are Federal Government Girls College, Munguno and Federal Science and Technical College, Lassa in Borno; Federal Government College, Potiskum and Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe; as well as Federal Science and Technical College, Michika, Adamawa.
The schools were considered to be located “within the high security risk areas of the North-East geo-political zone.”
“The schools are to remain closed until security situation in the states improves. The teachers of the affected schools will also be absorbed by the new schools,” a source told our correspondent.
The decision to absorb the teachers will however be taken at a meeting of all the principals of unity schools in the North East.
According to the statement, the minister has approved that candidates that registered for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, the National Examination Council and Basic Education Certificate Examination in FGGC, Potiskum, should have their examination centres relocated to FGGC, Bauchi.
