Fear of Boko Haram: University of Maiduguri students flee

The fear of Boko Haram attack on the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, on Sunday caused panic on the campus. This has led many of the students to flee the institution.

It will be recalled that two persons were reported to have died on Friday when stray bullets hit them when insurgents attacked the campus with rocket propelled grenades.

This development fuelled speculations that the insurgents have invaded the campus and detonated explosive devices.

But the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Mala Daura, said there was no plan to close down the institution as it was not under any threat of insurgency attack.

He also cautioned students against fleeing the campus in fear, insisting that the authorities had put all measures in place to ensure their security.

Daura said the rumour of possible attack on the campus by Boko Haram was “unfounded and misplaced,” assuring that the institution was safe.

The VC gave the assurance through the institution’s Chief Information Officer, Malam Tanko Mohammed.

He asked the students not to flee but to settle down for their academic activities.

He said, “There is no cause for alarm. The university management is working in collaboration with security agencies to ensure security for the entire university community. We have quite a good number of security personnel around the university and as such, parents and guardians should know that their children are safe.

“We have no intention to close the university as academic activities continue unhindered. We urged the students to continue their studies without fear because the security situation in Maiduguri is now calm and normalcy is returning.”
