Brendan Rodgers can still dream of a title as Liverpool won a nine-goal thriller at the Cardiff City stadium.
Liverpool were at full strength with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez in attack, while Cardiff striker Craig Bellamy was recalled to face his old club.
It was Cardiff who took an early lead, Jordon Mutch firing past Simon Mignolet following an uncharacteristic error by Joe Allen.
Brendan Rodgers' side would not be behind for long, however. Glen Johnson's ball in from the right was met by Luis Suarez, who made no mistake with the finish.
Surprisingly, the Bluebirds then went ahead for the second time on 25 minutes. Fraizer Campbell was the scorer, gathering Mutch's neat past and slamming emphatically home.
Parity was again restored before the interval, from an unlikely source. Philippe Coutinho's ball in was met by Martin Skrtel, who poked a finish past David Marshall to ensure the sides went into half-time on level terms.
The Slovakian defender then plundered his second after the interval, heading home from Coutinho's tempting corner kick.
But there was broad daylight between the sides for the first time as Luis Suarez snaffled his second goal of the game and No.27 of the season.
However cruel it might have been on the hosts, there was no disputing the brilliant opportunism behind it as Daniel Sturridge's wonderful back-heel put his strike partner in - and the finish from the Uruguayan was deadly.
Suarez then returned the favour, allowing Sturridge to add one of his own from close range before the Premier League's top scorer completed his hat-trick in stoppage time after Jordon Mutch had grabbed another consolation goal.
