APC to hold national convention, May 24

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Interim National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday said the party would hold its National Convention on May 24, 2014.

Mohammed made the announcement while briefing newsmen at the end of the party’s 9th Interim National Executive Committee meeting (NEC) in Abuja.

He said that APC had also scheduled its Ward, Local Government and State Congresses for April 5, 12 and 23 respectively.

The party used the opportunity to commiserate with the families of the people who died on Saturday, March 15 at several venues of the job test by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

“We also extend our sympathy and prayers to those who were injured in the stampede and wish them a speedy recovery.’’

Mohammed called for investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the applicants and what happened to their application fees.

He accused the management and officials of NIS “for their inability to provide better arrangement that could have saved precious lives.

“The death constitutes the latest in a series of events that have turned Nigeria into a massive killing field in recent times.’’

The scribe urged President Goodluck Jonathan to be proactive in the fight against corruption and incompetence in public and private institutions in the country.

He stressed the need for the Federal Government to renew its strategy in addressing insecurity, unemployment and corruption.

Mohammed added that the road-map unveiled recently by APC recognised the enormity of the challenges facing the country.

“Hence we made job creation our priority, followed by security and the fight against corruption, among others.

“The APC embodies the hopes and aspirations of the people. We are up to the task of restoring hope to our people’’, Mohammed said.

Mohammed was flanked by Govs. Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, Sen. Alli Sherif, Gen. Mohammed Buhari and Chief Ogbonnoya Onu.

Former Gov. Bola Tinubu of Lagos State, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Chief Olusegun Osoba and Sen. Danjuma Goje, who had all attended the NEC meeting, were also present. (NAN)
