The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has called for citizens’ action against corrupt leaders, arguing that Nigeria needs strong institutions to fish out and punish corrupt Nigerians
.
Amaechi spoke on Tuesday during an International Conference on Democracy and Good Governance held at the Government House in Port Harcourt
“If you have strong institutions, they (institutions) will fish out and jail the corrupt from the society, not necessarily the government in power. It is the system. This means that if that system is strong and independent, it will fish all of us out one after the other.
“The moment the first person goes to jail, the second person goes to jail, the third person goes to jail, everybody will be careful. Nobody wants to lose his freedom.
“Most people who are corrupt are extremely scared to talk about it because the more they talk about it, the more the system will come for them. Corruption is endemic.”
Amaechi, who lamented that the issue of resource control had been forgotten, cautioned that President Goodluck Jonathan’s successor would not address the issue if a South-South President failed to do so.
He said, “If tomorrow, President Goodluck Jonathan leaves office, who would we say is controlling the resources? Why are we not talking now or is it because it is our turn to chop?
“If tomorrow there is a new president, would this oppression not continue? You know what Nigerians have done to the South-South people? What the majority ethnic groups have done to is to shut the mouth of the South-South people.
“At the end of the administration of a South-South president, nobody can talk about resource control again. Never! It is finished forever. If you do not give yourself that resource control, will another person give it to you?”
Earlier, human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), accused the West of encouraging corruption in Nigeria, adding that banks in Europe and America accepted looted funds from corrupt Nigerians.
Falana said it was wrong for the West to create a warehouse for Nigeria’s loot and turn around to blame the country for being corrupt, insisting that Nigeria was not as corrupt as some Western countries.

Hmmmmmm! My Governor, thank you used "US" which emcompassed all leaders in Nigeria at all levels of Government. Though it didnt start today, corruption is the reason why the new teachers in Rivers State has not been paid. On resource control, if it is not address at the confab, our president cannot forced it out alone. It is our law makers that needed to initiate the motion. May God have mercy on all of us.
