Amaechi blasts FG over centenary celebration

Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Monday described Nigeria as a country drifting towards “a dangerous waterfall.”

Amaechi declared that the celebration of Nigeria’s centenary was unnecessary because of the killings of students and other innocent Nigerians by members of the Boko Haram sect.

The governor, who spoke while addressing members of the state House of Assembly on the state of the nation, queried the rationale behind such celebration when Nigerians were living in fear of hired assassins and armed robbers.

Amaechi observed that Abuja residents, who were supposed to be the chief hosts at the centenary celebration, were at various petrol stations struggling to buy fuel.

He criticised the Federal Government for giving Nigerians a false impression about the country’s economy and added that the citizens could feel the tremor of Nigeria’s wobbling economy.

Amaechi pointed out that Nigerians appeared to have lost the appetite to celebrate anything, even as he queried the legacy that would be left behind for the next generation.

He said, “What do our people feel and see when they get out of their houses in the morning? Sadly as leaders, we must admit the truth, which stares us in the face. It is the fact that our country is drifting perceptibly into a dangerous waterfall.

“Even in Abuja, most Nigerians who ordinarily would have been the chief celebrants (chief hosts) went about their daily chores while the others struggled at petrol stations trying to fill their tanks almost completely oblivious of the trappings of what should have been a grand announcement of our coming of age.

“Gradually but noticeably, Nigerians appear to have lost the appetite to celebrate anything. Embedded in our newfound affinity for low key celebration and an infinite state of sober reflection is the true state of the nation.

“Can we really celebrate when our children are being slaughtered while at school? Can we really celebrate when our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters are being slaughtered like chickens?

“Can we really celebrate when our fellow citizens live in constant and growing fear of kidnappers, hired assassins and armed robbers? Can we really celebrate when those constitutionally empowered to protect us turn their fury on us?

“In these questions lie the state of the nation. Where is the country headed? Where will the country be in another 100 years? What legacy are we leaving behind for our children?”

Explaining that no economic revolution could be achieved on candlelights or power generating sets, Amaechi said the current economic system of the country was breeding inequality.

  2. Mr. Rotimi Amaechi why can't you mind your business. I want to believe your mouth is licking that's why it’s difficult to close. But continue to talk only one day is enough to seal it. And also remember Governorship will come to an end some day and life will go on. Keep on stepping on tolls. Let me remind you that APC will not come to your aid when it will start. Keep on talking Parrots

  8. Amaechi must be VERY confused. The same man who said he refused to attend the celebrations because Jonathan did not attend the one he hosted in Portharcourt is now saying something different. Where there no robbers when Amaechi celebrated the centenary in Portharcourt? Would he have postponed it if there was fuel scarcity? Stop fooling yourself while thinking you are fooling Nigerians. We are smarter than that. No one missed you anyway.
Though I didn't like the idea of celebrating in the midst of mourning the massacred children

  9. Hypocrites. Please broaden your horizon and let reason prevail in all you say. It is this same attitude that has brought Nigeria to where we it is now. When will we start reasoning like Nigerians and not along ethnic and tribal lines? Opposition in every democracy is very healthy as it makes the incumbent sit up and act right that is if they have our interest at heart. As far as am concerned av seen nothing wrong in what that monkey Amaechi wrote cos its the truth. I have my grievances against Amaechi but all what he has written is the truth and i'll urge us all to embrace it. My People let us look at this scenario. You have a birthday party coming up and your chilldren dies(GOD FORBID) will you go ahaed with the birthday celebration? My people we have been sitting around and fooled around for too long. We need to stand up and say enough is enough. Both GEJ, AMAECHI and the rest of them have already amass so much wealth by crook means from what rightfully belongs to you and I and have secured themselves and the future of their children and children's children. PLEASE WAKE UP. VIVA NIGERIA

  10. People who castigate Amechi are either morons or wocked beings co-habiting with us in this country.
Let us for the purpose of reasoning say that Obasanjo, Buhari, IBB GEJ and the senate president each lost two children in that shameless slaughter of innocent children by the boko haram sect, will they all be present at Abuja to recieve a box and peice of paper all in the name of centenary celebration?
Wouldn't they then have dimmed it fit to fly the flag at half mast?
Politics should not overide our sense of reasoning.
I might have agreed with Amechi on all issues, but he is absolutely right this time.
Can you imagine asking those parents that lost their children in the slaughter to come for any form of ocassion while they are looking at the lifeless bodies of their children.
The president was wrongly adviced concerning the centenary celebration.
