Abacha's children blast Wole Soyinka

The daughter of late dictator, Sani Abacha, Gumsu, has attacked Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, pointing out that she was a lover of books written by Soyinka at her younger age but now, she finds Soyinka’s comment as “foolish, stupid and insignificant”.

She was reacting to the recent statement by the World-acclaimed writer that he rejected the centenary awards offered by President Goodluck Jonathan to celebrate the 100 years of the amalgamation of Nigeria because Abacha was also included in the list. Soyinka described the decoration of Abacha with a National honour as an insult.

Gumsu took to her facebook page to react to the statement, stating that “someone tell Soyinka I liked his books when I was younger but that is where it ends. Today I reject his stupid, foolish insignificant statement”.

In a related event, Sodiq Abacha, one of the sons of the late dictator also berated Soyinka for criticizing successive governments without proffering solution or offering himself for an elective position.

His open letter shared by Gumsu, reads in part:

“Sir, I believe brilliance is not perfection. I have grown and watched you criticize regime after regime and at that young and naive age I was thinking why wouldn’t this man just contest to be president so that Nigeria can be saved, I would have defiantly voted for Mr Soyinka if it would have brought an end to Nigeria’s woes. To my utter surprise, I heard about your FRSC leadership and how funds were misused and a great deal of it unaccounted for. “Oh my God! In the end he turned out to be just the same as everybody else” were my next thoughts. My hopes for you, all ended up in great disappointment”.

    1. Because people likes you lacked proper orientation and principles, who doesn't know his/her left from right except food and merriments, when they (soyinka & co) agitating for some of your "issues" (resources control, environmental pollutions, etc) he was not "regional sentimental" huh? Myopic and an ingrates fellas, and to you (abachas), do you think that by calling names can really change what or who persons are? Or do you think Nigerian has forgotten what your father did to them (except people like anon.7:51 and his so called n/delta)? It can only happen in Nigeria (lack of memories and principles) where your likes can boldly talk (even contest for a political post). You should bury your head in shame, why? 'cos a thief son is a thief son.

  3. Only in Nigeria can the family a dictator proven to have looted still have the guts to speak and even insult a nobel prize winner. I won't blame the family but us all.

  4. Are Abacha children telling us that their father deserve to be honor for being a dictator and a looter of national cofers? I think they should be ashamed of themselves.

  5. Nice talk. Why didn't he reject it bcs of OBJ. If he is alive like OBJ nobody would have touch his loots. If ota farm is no more today the whole north will not see eggs in the next one week. You can kill a whole village or a serving minister and turn around on next government of training snipers. Tribalism in excellence from selfish excellence.

  6. Why in the world would the country honor criminals, murderers and looters such as Abacha, Danjuma (who murdered Aguiyi) and Babangida? What a shame to this nation called Nigeria.

  7. He is a foolish cultist and a critics that have no solution to Nigeria problem.

  8. Soyinka's solutions to Nigeria's problems are only in his head. He proved to be a bad manager with his stInt at FRSC. General Abacha deserves any award he gets. The organizers of the centennery awards would have murdered history have they denied Abacha his rightful place.

  12. Even if Abacha stole the country blind, is he still to be blame for our currupt practices and economic stagnation after 15 years? Believe me some politicians and govt officials are worse than Abacha and are still walking our streets. Umoh S.

  15. Going by the way some people reason these days,it is as if education, morals and ethical standards are lacking in this country.
Howelse can we define it when people decide to castigate Soyinka and look the other way.
Have you read it today again that USA seized some Abacha loot again? What are we talking about?
Are people not criticizing IBB,OBJ et al?
Abacha was a looter,a killer,a murderer like no one before.
His family have a right to defend him because they are the direct beneficiaries of his loots.
All these ethnic chauvanists should just shut it and face facts and stop these hate campaigns.
All Nigerians should be proud of Soyinka, not Abacha the treasury looter.
FRSC nor the govt has not come out to indict Wole nor probe him for anything.
    What are we talking about?
Gej is just a confusionist seeking favour from an unusual source for his ill conceived ambition.

  16. If n only if Abacha were alive like IBB N OBJ will Soyinka had made dis statement. No leader had stolen more than both of them. time n tide will tell.

  17. All of you have said well, but in my opinion, the national honour was not given based on how past leaders did well or not but rather on recognition of history as one of those that led the nation from where it was in 1914 to 2014. If you have to remove Abacha from the head of states who has ruled Nigeria, then one has to rewrite history. so those of you saying, he was not supposed to be honoured should rewrite Nigeria history and delete the regime Abacha ruled Nigeria. Every past leader was decorated with the award, so whether bad or good, positive influence or negative, they all made history in our country. Today, the Nazis, Adolf Hitler and others make history, though they did unforgivable things, history wont be complete without those negative things. Likewise, when you are celebrating Nigeria as a nation for 100 years, you can't just remove Abacha from her history. The award was not based on only good history but also on the bad. Have you forgotten Ojukwu was given the award too? But he led the Biafra war that led to the death of over a million people. So this celebration is a reminder of our good and bad history and both has helped to position the country at where we are today.

  20. The truth is that both parties (The Abachas and Soyinka) are heroes and vilans @ the same time. Yes Abacha was a dictator and embezzled funds but trust me, we hv so many pple who govern this country presently that are worse than he is. If Abacha stole $5 billlion durin his regime wit a gun, can assure u that politicians now steal twice dat amount wit jst word and a pen.
As for Soyinka, he isa great man and one who should be admired but we should not also forget that he is Yet 2 answer for the mismanaged funds and unaccounted funds of the FRSC durin his watch under the same military regime he criticizes. Soyinka is yet 2 critisize himself for that so does he deserve a 2nd chance 2 even run for a politacal office when his hands are as well not clean?
The whole moral is that we should critisize and judge wisely and not 4get our past or where we are headin to. God bless our countr Nigeria

  21. Plz ignore my style of writing, i'm not a writer.

Late General Sani Abacha of blessed memory was a hero, unifier and above all a leader. Obj and his cohorts that are criticizing him are doing so because of personal grudges. Obj committed the offence of treason against the State and deserved to be punished.

Mr Anonymous Nice talk @ 8:20pm. Otta farm is the only productive farm in the whole of southern Nija that produces eggs, built with stolen public funds. Prior to 1999, the farm was more a less like the sahara desert

Do you know how many farms produce eggs in the North on daily basis. There are over more functional and productive farms than you can ever imagine. The population of chickens in Northern Nija alone is greater than the population of Bayelsa State people.

Let Obj close his farm or refuse to sell eggs to the North and the Mallams withhold their Cattle and Sheep and see where you will buy "SUYA" or "ESEWU".

Let me also remind you that the onions and groundnut oil you use to fry those eggs are from the North not to talk of other food stuff and items like rice, yam and potatoes. What abt the shoe n belt you are wearing right now? I bet you know where the material (Hyde & skin) used in producing them came from.

Prof Soyinka is a great scholar but he is a coward. Why did he ran away on exile when activists like the late Ken Saro Wiwa and OBJ and refused to leave. Ask him why he ran away? was it to avoid prosecution over his tenure as Chairman of FRSC?

We have better issues to address than resort to insulting each other, it wont help us in anyway. Let Prof come out now and fight the rot in GEJ's Goverment and insecurity. Prof is not an activist but a selfish individual filled with hatred of the North.

Thump up for all of including anonymous 8:03am and my candid advice for some of us is dat we shouldn‘t be carried away completely due to “RELIONG AND TRIBAL“ sentiments. Thanks!
