2015: PDP governors meet in Minna today

As politicians continue their permutations for 2015 general elections, the meeting of the 18 governors in the Peoples Democratic Party is to take place in Minna, Niger State today.

Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja showed that the meeting, which will hold after the North-East rally of the party, is aimed at preparing the party for the general elections.

One of the governors, who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said that the meeting would discuss how to halt the gale of defection in the party and how to also woo members of the opposition into the ruling party.

Apart from this, he said the governors would assess the PDP Governors Forum, which was formed a year ago following the crisis that rocked the Nigeria Governors Forum and split it into two.

He said the Chairman of the PDPGF, Godswill Akpabio, who is also the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, would brief the governors on his achievements, if any and how to move the Forum forward.

He said, “We will meet in the evening after the rally in Minna tomorrow (today) in order to discuss how to move the forum and our party forward, specially now that subtle preparations are on for the 2015 elections.

“We need to strategise and as President Goodluck Jonathan said recently during the PDP National Executive Council meeting; our meeting should be regular.

“We definitely can’t afford to lose power to the All Progressives Congress in 2015.”

Our correspondent also gathered that as part of its sensitisation programme, the PDP will also hold the North-East rally in Bauchi soon.

As at the time of going to the press, no date has been fixed but it was learnt that the rally might hold before the end of March.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, has revealed that the Sokoto State Government started granting free education at primary and secondary school levels to all residents of Sokoto State since 2007, irrespective of students’ states of origin.

He said his administration abolished the indigene /non -indigene dichotomy as well as deleted the nomenclature from the official language and communication in the correspondences within the state.

Wamakko, in a statement he sent to our correspondent through an electronic mail, was reacting to comments credited to the Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, in which he (Aliyu) advised the northern state governments to introduce free education for its citizens to further educational development in the region.

Wamakko, who is also a former school teacher, revealed further that school enrolment increased by 300 per cent in the last five years, while registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the National Examination Council Examination “rose by 500 per cent.” He said this led to huge increase in the number of undergraduates studying in Nigeria and overseas in countries like Malaysia, UAE, England and Sudan.
