We want to build multi-party democracy – Buhari

Former Head of State and Presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progress Change (CPC) in the 2011 Presidential election, Major General Muhammadu Buhari has said that the mission of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is to ensure that proper multi-party democracy is established in the country.

Speaking on Kaduna based Liberty radio on the forthcoming membership registration of the APC, Buhari lamented what he called insecurity and management of the Nigerian nation, adding that the APC intends to properly secure and manage the nation since Nigerians are now well aware of their rights and what they expect from government.

The former Nigerian leader, who has contested the Presidential election on three different occasions noted that it was because of his belief in multi-party democracy that he went to court to challenge the outcome of the previous elections, adding that the nation’s electoral system will thrive better when people come and go.

He said “we have been to court three times in 2003, 2007 and 2011 not because we were convinced that we were going to win. We went because we want to make sure that this multi-party democracy takes firm grip on Nigerians. If we can come and go, the system will be strong enough to guarantee security for this country and guarantee prosperity for this country. This is our objective.

“All we are fighting for is to have proper democracy. What I mean is that whatever people say, whether they reflect briefly on it or not, Nigerians are now well aware of their rights and what they expect from government. In APC, we have reduced it to two your security sound management.

“We have to secure this country and manage it properly. I think people have suffered enough, they are now prepared to listen and I believe they are listening and are cooperating. We have been convinced that since 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed without a shot being fired that multi party democratic system is superior. But elections must be free and fair.

“Like I have said, we have to properly secure and manage this country. You cannot deny citizens their rights to express their own opinion or you allow some people to brazenly threaten the cooperate existence of the country and instead of inviting them and asking them to explain themselves to the nation, they are given a ride in Presidential jets.

“When others do it, you go and lock them up or you harass them. That is not the way to do things. For example, when the seven governors decided to break out from the PDP and we went and visited them; five of the governors took the risk. One of the governors still have problem with the police, his children were arrested, the bank officials that transacted business with his children were locked up.

“Those are children of governors. You can imagine what will then happen to children of ordinary Nigerians. There is this problem of insecurity in the land, both physical and material which the All Progressive Congress is about to whip out God willing.”

  4. "There is this problem of insecurity in the land, both physical and material which the All Progressive Congress is about to whip out God willing.” I bet to say that this insecurity is man made, artificial just to cast aspersion on the present government.
Let's wait and see, the ballot box will tell.

  8. The south West are blindly pushing the Northern Hausa/Fulani to come to power by all means in 2015 with Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the chief culprit.
This is unfortunate and we other Nigerians will not watch and see this mess orchestrated by greed come to pass.
Yes Goodluck Jonathan will sure hand over but by God's grace in 2019.

  15. This is exactly my grouse with this man called Buhari. so because lamido is from the north exempts him and his children from being charged for corruption. Did he (buhari) ever bother to ask what crime they were charged for? The likes of femi kayode and busola saraki are also being tried for corruption cases and rightly so too> Even the son of past pdp chairman tukur is also being tried. we know your antics mr buhari and your likes will never see the light of day. Imagine the nonsense. A thief is a thief whether a member of opposition or not. Same thing he did has military dictator where he had shagari who was then head of state placed under house arrest but had the deputy alex ekwueme imprisoned. Buhari i keep saying is an ethnic local champion and will continue to be one. yes the man may not have personally enriched himself like others but has definitely looked the other way several times when the people stealing are of his ilk or clan. mumu general. Better start getting ready to start crying once again and all his supporters i hope have bought more than enough handkerchiefs for him

  16. @ Lee, please be honest though, I do not know you however, Governors Children and teachers even lecturers are they the same though they suppose but here in Nigeria are they?

@ Anonymous 4:53 ye,s it is in the record that Buhari waged wars against any form of corruptions more than any government in this country besides, considering his material comfort as a former governor of Kaduna state, former Petroleum minister, former N/A Armor commander, former GOC, former Head of states, and PTF chairman; but yet he has no money till now therefore, this tells you that the man is an uncorrupt person, please check his records just that many people are very far from facts and that is the reason why people like you can open mouth against well polished Buhari.

@ Emmex, I know you before now especially with your circumlocutionary comments. Very unfortunate you’ve lost touch with your country's basic political history otherwise, you wouldn't have said that to Gov Fash because when they were fighting for democracy in this country with many lost their lives even in exiles where were you or any of them in PDP including GEJ however, we thank God military is flushed out in power therefore, we should do it well regardless of who is there and do not forget the talk from Prince Yomy Johnson of Liberia that the gun that liberate may not rule. Moreover, you lack morale clout for urging South-West people to stand firm; stand firm for who or that that can't differentiate left from right; yes-man is the one you expect South-West to support, you are lucky I do not know you otherwise, I would have teach you a lesson by pulling out one of your dirty canines with taekwondo.

@ Anonymous 10:10 pm please get the facts correctly before going to the market; Buhari is never a Bokoharam man and can never be Boko haram please go and see the lecture made by Gen Azazi (RIP) in Asaba perhaps, you may be relieved from this your current ideological bondage and find out what led to the untimely death of the mentioned Bayelsa born gallant and combatant Army General.

Never have you allowed any political coconut to deceive you, I am never and can't be a Northerner but the fact is Mohammed Buhari is one of the few selfless Nigerians we still have on planet earth.

  17. @ Yemolala4me, you talk politely but check your last sentence in your 3rd paragraph. Remember, 2 or more wrongs can never make a right. Lets speak with one voice and make Nigeria better. God bless Nigeria.

  18. Really, Buhari may not be corrupt even though I share some doubt considering the source of the enormity of fund used to sponsor his numerous failed presidential bids. That aside, you should also realize that we are supposed as a country to have gone past this teething stage in our political journey had this man not truncated our democracy in 1983.

Let me give a sequence of what should have become of Nigeria had we transited from one democratic dispensation to another from 1983 till date. Alhaji Shehu Shagari would have handed over to Ekwueme in 1987. By Ekwueme's integrity the building of our nation would have seen a monumental progress by 1995 when another will take over.

That singular act of truncating our democratic process sent us backward. After that it was discovered the they were not corrupt after all. Ekwueme left government a poorer man than he entered.

The subsequent military regimes took Nigeria back to coma and that wouldn't have been if this non corrupt Buhari did not truncate a legitment process.

The military which he was part of destroyed this nation not PDP. Obj his collegue came in messed up the process. The truth is that we are better governed by a civilian rather than an extremist like Buhari and a perceived Islamist.

Imagine a nation where the core noth alone own over 80 percent of the oil blocks deposited in another region. Please fair should be fair. He is not corrupt but how many oil blocks did he give to his people while he was head of state. Corruption is hydra headed and stealing our common wealth is only an aspect. Another aspect is giving undue advantage to a region and I call that curruption by inequity. The third is when a square peg is put in a round hole; giving a position to and incompetent person on regional ground. Check the appointments since 1960. Another aspect is federal character. Another is maginalization while the final one alliances. I will consider Buhari a saint after checking him his administration against these facets and he comes clean.

You cannot speak from both sides of your mouth and claim to be a man of integrity. Tinubu was and is still corrupt. If Buhari once attested to that then his new move is considered hipocritical by any right thinking Nigerian.

If Buhari emerges as the next C in C in Nigeria, corruption brought him forth and he would no have the impetus to fight it. Trust my umbias position.
