University accountant docked for alleged N14 million fraud



A 34-year-old female accountant with the Federal University of Agriculture, FUNNAB, Abeokuta, Oluwabukola Banjo, was on Wednesday arraigned in court for allegedly defrauding her employer of N14 million.


The accused was arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of stealing and fraudulent conversion of money belonging to the university.

The charge number MA/514c read thus, “That you, Banjo Oluwabukola Olutosin (f) and others now at large between the month of January and November 2012, at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in Abeokuta Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony to wit stealing and thereby committed offence contrary to section 516 of the criminal code laws of Ogun State 2006″.

The count two stated thus, “that you, Banjo Oluwabukola Olutosin and others now at large, in the same date, place and time, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did fraudulently convert to your
own use the sum of N14,800.300k property of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta while in their employment as Account 11 and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 383(1),(2)),punishable under section 390(5) of criminal code laws of Ogun State 2006″.

At the court sitting, the Police Prosecutor, Banji Sangotokun, said five out of nine witnesses in the criminal charge against the accused person were present. The accused had earlier been granted bail for N500,000 with one surety in like sum during the first mention of the case on August 21, 2013.

The Wednesday arraignment also had in attendance an Investigating Police Officer, Yusuf Dauda, from the Special Fraud Unit, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He came with a statement obtained from the accused during investigation. The accused was represented by her counsel, Abdul-Azeez Ajidele, who told the court that, his legal team were ready to pursue the case.

However, the magistrate, Anthony Araba, adjourned to April 7 for definite hearing citing his tight schedule as one of the reasons.
