More trouble for Moyes as Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic quits

The Manchester United captain, who has been at Old Trafford for eight years and won the Champions League along with five Premier League triumphs, is set for a move to Italy - with Inter Milan, Roma, AC Milan and Juventus all chasing him.

Serbian Vidic is 32 and like all players over 30 at United, he was offered a one-year deal.

But the lure of a longer contract on the continent has seen him decide to quit at the end of the season.

“It’s the last year of my contract and I have had eight wonderful years here,” said Vidic. “My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career.

“I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow, memories that will live with me and the fans forever.

“However I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season.

“I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years

“I am not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this Club for so many years. I’ve got a few options to move on and I will choose the right one for me and for my family.

“I am now going to focus all my efforts on playing for Manchester United and do the best I can for the team until the end of the season. I hope this stops any further speculation about my future.”

Vidic joined United at the start of 2006 and quickly formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Rio Ferdinand. It became one of the most successful in the club’s history.

He was in the side that beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow in 2008 to lift the Champions League and two years later became Sir Alex Ferguson’s captain, leading United to a record-breaking 19th Premier League title in his first season with the armband.
